Dumb question, but is texting while driving significantly more dangerous then eating while driving or changing the radio station while driving? I ask because my uncle totaled his truck a few years ago while trying to eat and drive. If we're going to outlaw one, shouldn't we outlaw everything?
I never text and drive. 5 of my sister's friends were killed in a fiery car crash the day after they graduated high school because the driver was texting- it was a horrifying was to realize how dangerous it is.
Dumb question, but is texting while driving that much different from eating while driving or changing the radio station while driving? I ask because my uncle totaled his truck a few years ago while trying to eat and drive. If we're going to outlaw one, shouldn't we outlaw everything?
I know what you're getting at, but as a blanket statement I disagree. I try not to eat and drive, but I can handle a munchkin or a not-messy sandwich in a pinch. Texting requires you to take your eyes off the road in most cases and definitely takes more mental energy than eating.
I can change the station from my steering wheel, so that's not an issue for me.
I agree with everyone that it is really stupid, but I have to admit that I am guilty of doing it every now and then. I really only do it when I am sitting at a light or in traffic but sometimes if the traffic starts moving I am guilty of finishing my text. I only send maybe 50-75 total texts a month so I am not a frequent offender, but I am guilty!!
6/28/10: Lost our sweet baby Addyston at 18wk 1day to pPROM
7/24/11: Michael William born at 24wk 2d due to IC after an emergent cerclage at 18wks, 4wk home BR and 2 weeks hospital BR. Grow strong our little Miracle!
9/17/11: Michael joined his sister in heaven after 8 amazing weeks with us on earth. He fought a very hard fight but NEC was too much for him in the end.
I texted Chuck the other day while sitting at a red light just to say "ok" and I felt like the people in the other lane were looking at me weird so I was trying to hide it. I felt guilty even at the red light!
DH's co-worker was killed last month while on his cell phone (not sure if he was texting, dialing or just talking on it). He rear ended a TANK bus. I was also almost hit by a car while the driver was dialing/texting. I was in the cross walk coming out of the grocery store, and he ran the stop sign and I mean I was THIS close to being hit. The really sad part is that he never looked up or stopped. I had to run/jump out of the way for him to miss me and he never knew what had almost happened. Nice huh?

I am totally showing my age here, but I don't really text at all. I can probably count on both hands how many times I've done it in my life. If I were to try while driving, I would definitely be a danger to others!!!
I will text at a red light but not if its a long text but just a short reply of ok or what time or something like that--if its going to require i long text i will just wait and call the person later--im too uncoordinated to attempt that--did anyone ever watch the UK PSA about texting and driving. I showed it to my little sister b/c i think the younger generations (i.e. hs kids) are the ones who are really bad about it. It is a scary long PSA and definitely impacted me
I am guilty, guilty, guilty. When I'm talking on my phone, I'm on my bluetooth. But I totally text, surf the internet, and anything else I can do on my phone while driving. There's no excuse, I know it's incredibly stupid, irresponsible and unsafe, but I still do it. If I saw me on the road, I would want to rearend myself... Really though, I wish they would make it illegal too. It was illegal to use a cell while driving when I lived in DC unless you had a headset, and I didn't text at all, and barely used my phone.

No intent to flame anyone, as this is just my personal opinion. I have a hands free bluetooth system in my car, and I always use it when I am using my phone while driving. I never dial the phone or look away from the road. I never text while driving. Seeing someone else texting while moving really makes me angry. There is not a single excuse that makes it ok, ever. You can eat and keep your eyes on the road. You can talk on your bluetooth, and still keep watching what you are doing. You CANNOT possibly read or write a text without taking your eyes off of the road. I don't care how great your texting skills are, you cannot read and drive safely.
Texting while driving is irresponsible, and a deathwish IMO. I feel the same about people who read, dial their phones, apply makeup, and shave (yes, I have witnessed that) while the car is moving. If you are stopped, it is fine IMO as long as you stop whatever you are doing the second you need to move again. I hope they find a way to use the GPS system in phones to disable texting functions while the car is moving. I know they have the technology.
There are not a whole lot of things other people do that really get me on a high horse, but this is one of them. It scares the sh!t out of me that people think this is an OK thing to do while I have my baby on the roads, much less when it's other parents out driving with their kids.
