Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone NOT do any screening?

I didnt do any first tri screening, or NT scan. My doctor asked if I wanted to do the 2nd tri screening, but I really dont know if I want to do it. I am only 20 so my risks for DS are already low. Plus, I dont want to worry to wait to get the results back, or worry if it comes back abnormal and really is a false positive.

I am still having my big u/s in a few weeks though to have all those measurements done.

WDYT or what did you do? Why?

Re: Anyone NOT do any screening?

  • I have not done any screening or optional tests. As long as I had an u/s to know that baby was growing in there and getting doppler checks, I figured I didn't need to worry beyond that. Plus, I don't want to spend the money. I figured anything major would show up on the big u/s and we would have time after that to adjust if need be.

  • I didn't have any screenings, I didn't want the worry of waiting for test results and DH and I will take whatever God gives us for a baby whatever medical issues she may have.

  • I didn't do any additional testing with either of my girls, and they are both perfect. We decided that we weren't going to terminate if they found anything anyway, so why worry ourselves especially when those tests have a high false-positive rate?

We did have our 20w anatomy scan, and I"ll have one more u/s to see where the baby is for the c/s. Other than that, just regular testing for us!

  • I'm not doing any additional screening either.  DH and I discussed it and decided we just didn't feel the need to.  We'll have our 20 week u/s and have the measurements done, but nothing else.

This for me too.  I didn't have any risk factors and I didn't want to needlessly worry about test results.

  • We did the NT scan solely to get another look at our LO. Period. My nurse said "free" and "ultrasound" in the same sentence, so I was all over that. Of course it was beyond wonderful to hear our LO was completely healthy and very low risk. We got our results immediately after the u/s. I'm also glad we did it because to date it's the only u/s where we've been able to see our LO moving all around.

  • We didn't do any screenings with DS and won't with Amy future babies. Our insurance doesn't cover it, and we would only terminate if my health was at risk. Also, we were told we would need an amnio to confirm questionable results from the screenings or u/s, so we would do that if necessary.

  • I didn't do any of the screenings or optional tests. The prevalence of false positives is why - especially since no matter what the results showed, we wouldn't have terminated the pregnancy. The way I looked at it, there was no need to worry about additional things!

This exactly.  Our insurance covered it 100% and it was another chance to see what our LO was up to.  If you're comfortable with your decision that's all that should really matter.

  • We didn't do anything except the big u/s. We decided not too because we wouldn't terminate if there was a problem. We are big planners but feel like planning for something we learned about from testing wouldn't be realistic as we wouldn't know the extent of the issue until the baby is here. We are taking a leap of faith, I guess.

  • Same here. We declined any special screenings or tests this time around. We did the 1st tri screening last time and got good results, then found out about the loss at the NT scan. I just couldn't put myself through that again, plus, the tests never showed that anything was wrong with the baby and I still lost him. So in my mind, I thought what was the point of going through that again if it really isn't telling?

I'm having so many u/s this time around, we figured we're likely to see something "wrong" if there's an issue.

  • I did do the quad screening.  That said, if there is a next time around, I will most definitely NOT do it.  It gave me two weeks of worry that I just didn't need.
  • I decided to do it because my insurance covers it and why not get prepared  JUST in case there are any problems?

Plus I REALLY want to see the baby so I am looking forward to the 3D Ultrasound!

  • Nope, we didn't do it last time or this time, with a caveat.  Last time, we didn't do it because we would not have terminated or done a CVS or amnio and we really didn't care what the odds were of having a child with certain problems.  Then, that pregnancy ended, but since it was due to a molar pregnancy, we needed additional screening at 7w and 10w to verify that the placenta hadn't grown out of control (the mole growing back - acts like a tumor, which can be cancer).  So at the 10w scan, LO was a week ahead and they went ahead and measured the NT anyway.

If we wanted the odds of certain issues, we would have had to pair the measurement with a blood test, but I specifically opted out of the blood test.  I didn't want to know, even though insurance would cover it.

That was way long.  I have to say, the NT was nice in that we know LO is probably healthy, but if I had a third pregnancy, I still probably wouldn't opt for an NT scan unless I was looking for something like molar regrowth.

  • 4 women in my office had testing done and all 4 were given false positives and worried needlessly....no way jose!
  • We did screening, but I would have worried more without it than with it, I think.  (My screening results have all been reassuring so far.)

Also, my local hospital doesn't have a NICU, which made it especially important for me that my doctors and I had as much information as possible pre-delivery - if a problem looked likely, I wanted to be as prepared as possible and give baby the best possible chances.
