Snap N Go vs. Travel System

Prior to BFP I always assumed I would get a Travel System for my LO, however, now that I'm pregnant and have read up on a few things, I was wondering if a traveling system would be a waste of money? I'm interested in getting a Snap n Go because I like the idea of them being lightweight and easy to handle for times when its just mom and baby (I'm very thin and have very little strenth to lug an infant car seat with infant AND a full-size stroller @ the same time). Space isn't a big concern, because I drive an SUV, but the weight is for me. I'm not that much of a walker/jogger or anything (I hardly EVER excercise) and was thinking that a snap and go for the occasional trips to the mall would be great for my lifestyle. However, I've seen infants at about 8 or 9 months that are just toooooo long for infant seats, and I wouldn't want little one hanging out of the seat and stroller in the malls. LOL. So I thought at that point I could get something like the MacLaren Quest that fully reclines but provide baby with the same amount of support as a full sized stroller and is light enough for me to handle.

So after saying all of that....the question.

Do you think I'd miss out by opting out of the traveling system and going with a Snap and Go (and later on an umbrella type stroller that I would be able to use for quite a few years)?

Re: Snap N Go vs. Travel System

  • I've read that travel systems are basically junk and too bulky.  I am getting the snap 'n go for when she is small probably use it for the first 5 to 6 months, then I will go shopping for some kind of light weight stroller.  We are also getting a jogger b/c we live near trails and lots of parks and I like to run/walk.  I don't think you will be missing anything by not getting a travel system.

  • Just an FYI - you can get a full sized stroller like the Baby Jogger City Mini for about 4 lbs heavier than the snap n go that you can put a car seat adapter on.  Peg Si, Maclaren XLR are other similar options.  Travel systems don't all have to be Graco or Chicco beasts.

    Great idea!

  • I used to be all for snap n gos, but then realized when my niece grew out of her infant seat at 6 months, that it's basically $70 or so for 6 months, and completely useless after. I agree with pp-- if you can figure out what stroller you want to begin with (and there are other lightweight options), thats a better idea. Of course we're not going to get around buying an infant seat, but the snap n go is completely optional. If I were you, I'd go with the City Mini or the Maclaren XLR. If we weren't getting a Bob, I'd go with the Maclaren probably.

I totally agree, don't get a "travel system." Just get the pieces you want.

  • FYI- The City Mini car seat adapter is pretty much the same price as the snap and go stroller so it really is just a matter of preference and if you want to have two strollers around.

  • We got the snap n go and the Bob jogging stroller. We plan to use the snap n go and then the jogging stroller when he outgrows it. I think the travel system is just too bulky.

  • I was totally anti-travel system before I got pregnant but after testing them out in the store we decided we actually liked the Chicco one (hated the Graco). So we got that and then we're going to get an umbrella stroller when the baby's a little bigger (a maclaren triumph or volo most likely). We don't live in a city where navigating a bigger stroller is much of an issue though so that might be a factor to consider.
  • Getting a Maclaren XLR for the reasons you stated.
  • I bought a travel system (Graco Metrolite) but only because I got it for $80 at Target(I think it is being discontinued). I would have paid close to that for the infant carseat alone I think. It's ok for the price but I am going to also get a lightweight umbrella stroller. I tested out a few in the store and it I really liked the MacLaren Quest (I think) It reclines all the way back, folds easily, has a small basket,  isn't expensive and was light weigt and tall enough. I can see using it when LO is around 1 and is walking.

  • DD is 11 months and just outgrew her infant carseat (Graco Safeseat).  We had the Snap N Go and LOVED it.  It was light, easy, and we sold it on Craigslist for $40 the other week.

We now have a convertible carseat and the Maclaren Volo.

Looking back, we would have done the same exact thing.

  • a lot of the travel systems are really heavy, unless you get something like the graco metro lite.

if i had to do it again, i wouldn't get a travel system, i would just get a snap and go.
