Does anyone have prenatal coverage and is not on a group insurance plan?

We aren't insured under a group plan, we just have an individual plan. The plan we have now does not even offer prenatal coverage and I have not been able to find one that does in CO. Anyone have individual insurance that has prenatal coverage? Thanks!

  • I know a person who has it in GA, but she had to wait 18 months to be covered.

  • It's not easy to find individual maternity coverage. Generally you have to be insured for a certain amount of time before you're eligible, and that is only if it's offered to begin with. I believe it varies from state to state.

  • I have a friend who was dealing with this same situation. She is able to buy a prenatal policy (same monthly cost she pays now) through a local clinic/hospital. She has to have it for 9 months before conception and it will cover her on an 80-20 until she meets her out of pocket which is $2000 per person.

You might need to really call around and od a lot of research. She found this out through a friend, but maybe you could call some OB offices or local hospitals to ask about this.

  • Blue cross blue shield has it.  I use to have it and it was very good.  But I paid like 300 a month for it and it had a waiting period of 12 months

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield is what we have-they don't offer prenatal in CO. I think we will paying for my next pregnancy out of pocket.?
  • From what I have seen it is often not worth it.

A lot of hospitals have payment plans for if you are uninsured- and they work out to be cheaper than adding up all the insurance premiums for 12+ months before even getting pg (and of course that assumes you get pg right away) + 9 months of pg, + the OOP max.

If, god forbid, your DC was really sick, he/she would be covered under your regular policay (assuming you had a family policy).  So you really only need to consider the actual delivery costs.
