I am getting dh the gift of time away for Christmas and my mom is going to keep the kids. I know there is the driskoll (sp?) and lakeway but can anyone recommend anywhere else that would be a good in (or close to) town getaway?
I can't recommend Lakeway enough...it's TOTALLY worth the drive IMO But if you really want something downtown, we've stayed at the Omni and it was pretty nice as well.
I LOVE vintage villas. it's so close in town, yet you feel like you're far away. the view and sunset is awesome! when we stayed we went to hill country pasta house for dinner (hudson on the bend is really close too if you want to spend $$$). brunch the next morning was nice too. plus, they frequently run great specials. call and ask for the relax with rewards offer and see what they're offering.
If you're willing to go a little further out, the Inn Above Onion Creek in Kyle is fabulous. It includes a terrific dinner and breakfast, and is one of our favorite places for a real getaway (especially when it is cool enough to use a fireplace - very romantic!).
Maybe Hotel San Jose in SoCo? It has lots of places to eat, hang out, shop and still be fairly close to downtown if you felt like heading that direction.
Another good downtown hotel is the Stephen F. Austin Intercontinental. There's also the Hotel St. Cecilia off SoCo which recently opened and I've been dying to check out - https://www.hotelsaintcecilia.com/
my two dream nights away are the hotel san jose on south congress and the inn at onion creek in kyle.
a night on soco would be so fun, imo. you can eat at one of the local restaurants, people watch on soco, hang out at the hotel bar. we have friends who go hang out at their bar even when not staying there. the rooms are super nice too, i've been inside one but never slept there. theyre super modern and minimalist.
my dad and i drove out to the inn at onion creek one day, just to check it out and see the rooms. he wanted to take my mom there and i wanted to have a night away with david. it hasnt happened yet, but the inn was lovely.
the SFA downtown is really nice too. i've been in their rooms but never stayed the night (i sound like a hooker ) there either. you could eat downtown, go to a bar, walk the capitol grounds while holding hands.

we've stayed at the Stephen F Austin and its nice! look into hotwire if you're not too picky! we used that and got the Intercontinental! you can look on better bidding and it'll help you decipher which hotel you'll be getting...
It was in the summer though, so we spent time at the pool, and went out on lake LBJ, and played on their live grass putt putt course (with live flamingos!). I also went to the spa and we hit up some wineries on the way home. I'm not sure when you plan to go, but there may be more to do when it's warmer outside....
Have to give another rec for Inn above Onion Creek. It's fantastic there. We've stayed as a family (like taking over the entire place) several times, and it's just wonderful.

Dude, I wish you had asked just a couple of weeks earlier. Vintage Villas had an amazing groupon deal for 1/2 off. Had to purchase by 12/6 though. Definitely worth a shot seeing if they have any good deals though... they often do. That's where we got married and we loved spending our wedding night there.

Another rec here for Inn Above Onion Creek (B&B) and Hotel San Jose. We stayed at Hotel San Jose our wedding night and first anniversary. Really nice place.
there is a new Hilton downtown by the convention center... the rooms are super nice and you can always get a great deal. I was surprised by how nice it was. walk downtown doesn't hurt too.
but if I was picking I'd splurge and stay at the Stephen F. Austin they have fun romance packages with balconies that overlook sixth street or congress.

I think they also have another hotel they opened recently but I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me.

it's the st cecilia, named after the patron saint of musicians. it looks awesome also, but i think it's suuuper expensive.
