OMG my sister's having twins!!

She went to her 21wk ultrasound (which is her 1st one this pregnancy!) Today she found out she's having twins and she already has 2 kids. She really wasn't planning on this baby and now she's in shock b/c she's having 2! I'm really excited for her but understand her nerves! I thought she looked much bigger than someone with just 1 baby a few wks ago. Did this happen to anyone else??

Re: OMG my sister's having twins!!

  • I also found out I was having twins at 21 weeks, so I understand the shock!  This was our first pregnancy though, and totally planned.  As far as being bigger, that wasn't really the case for me.  I have a long torso, so never got very "huge" at all - lots of people didn't believe me when I said I was having twins!

  • I went in for a last minute ultrasound this past weekend (everything was fine, it was a "better safe than sorry" type thing), and that's how I found out.

Otherwise, we would have found out at 20 weeks too!

  • Mine wasn't a surprise @ all but I really didn't start looking bigger (like someone carrying twins) until my 3rd tri.
  • i found out at 20 wks at my 1st us as well.  DH says i looked huge from day 1 and that i was bigger than his friends wives that were pregnant so he thougth twins from day 1.... Stick out tongue
  • I found out at my first ultrasound that was at 18 weeks, the pregnancy was planned, but the twins were not expected, but are a blessing! :)

  • i can't even imagine finding out that late! i found out at 5w : )

make sure she sees a perinatologist to get things checked out- since she didn't know - she might not have been trying to gain more weight, which is good for a twin pg, etc.  have her read Dr. Luke's book on being pg with twins -- it will help her to have a healthy twin pg - because it's not always easy to- she'll need all the knowledge she can get- and often OBs don't know much about twins.

  • Yep that happened to us. We found out we were having identicalsbat our 18 week ultrasound. Our two kids are 3 and 1. We never thought it would happen to us. At 16 weeks I was measuring 16 weeks. At 25 weeks I was measuring 32 weeks. Does she know if they are sharing a placenta? If they are se needs to get in to see a peri as this is the time some complications like twin- to-twin tranfusion syndrome present.
  • Thanks for all the replies! I don't know if they are sharing the same placenta she didn't tell me and I'm not sure if she knows since she was in shock about it. I'll ask her and give her the name of that book! I guess I'm just surprised that she didn't have an ultrasound before then....but then again not all dr's/insurance are the same!
