Austin Babies

what's this about a photographer at the hospital?

excepting Lyndsay, I mean.

You're saying a photographer came by and took pictures of your baby?  For you, I'm guessing?  For what?  What kind of pictures?  Was it for the hospital web site?  We didn't have anyone come by our room w/ a camera to take pics (aside from family members) and now I'm mad about it!  Darn.  Jay, however, says he signed a paper saying he didn't want our sons on the web site, so maybe they just sidestepped us altogether.

Re: what's this about a photographer at the hospital?

  • I don't know if this is what everyone else is talking about, but there was a photographer that came by our room the day after DS was born and offered to take pictures of him.  We got suckered into it, and ended up spending $$ for pictures that were not really what we wanted or had in mind (style-wise).  We later paid roughly the same amount for another photographer (who had done my maternity pics) to take beautiful pictures of Little Man.  In retrospect, I wish we had not agreed to have this photographer take pictures for us, and with Baby Boy #2 we will definitely be declining.

  • Yeah, we had them done at Seton.  They came by the day after or so and said it wouldn't cost anything unless we liked them, so we did it.  They were alright, we bought a couple.  It was nice I guess since we weren't really in a good place at the time to afford better pictures.
  • we had someone come by if i remember correctly.  once we told them our baby was in nicu they left us alone.  our nicu nurse rocked and helped me do a little photo session and even set it up to hide all his cords and connections - i was impressed.  she used my camera and took some great shots of us together.  you can see some of those shots she took in teagan's birth slideshow.  she said she does that a lot for the nicu babies, she did a really good job and i was very thankful.

when i had taryn (in louisiana) we had someone come around 3 times to try and take her photo and she screamed a massive hissy fit every time and they finally gave up.   if they could see her now ;)

  • she came by when i was in recovery and said she would be back when we were ready to be photographed. she came back once and T was having some tests run, so she came back after that.

she was like "well, you need to change her into an outfit and grab one of your blankets and prop her up on your bed" do you guys remember how weird it was actually dressing your baby for the first time?! the photographer was kind of impatient and i don't know how to explain it, but she didn't like the blanket i had brought from home.  she snapped her fingers at T to get her attention!? she did not have kids, that was apparent. i finally told her that was enough because T was hysterical.  then she wanted us to check out all the pics and order then and there.  it was not smooth, not professional and she had no baby skills.  i'm not opposed to a photographer coming in, but this lady just sucked. she complained that T's eyes were open! she said most newborns kept their eyes closed.  when dh tried to comfort T, she said we really didn't want his fingers/hands in pic. i get that, but she was screaming!

i think we just got a dud--i'm sure they aren't all like that.

  • our nurse warned us about it, but we never saw them...in the week we were there.
  • hmm...everybody does it in Michigan.  Its just a single picture taken of the baby in that plastic bassinet thing with their hospital hat on and receiving blanket.  We bought the pictures of Jakob, and I couldn't believe there wasn't a photographer around after Layna was born.  The nurses said there was some self-serve kiosk thing if we wanted to do that....

We even have the newborn photos of my sister, and me, and just about every cousin and everyone I've ever known in Michigan that's had a baby in the last 30 years.....

Its like the baby's first school picture.  I'm sure its the same photog company :)

See, my parents have those of us when we were little but I don't think they do it like that anymore. DD was born on Saturday morning and nobody came to talk to us about it until Monday morning. When we told them we were leaving that day, they just said never mind.
  • There was a photographer at NAMC.  We declined the photo session b/c there was just too much things going on with the c-section recovery, trying to nurse, taking meds, trying to sleep, bonding with baby, visitors, billing, etc.  They said we would only pay if we wanted the pics but we still didn't do them.  I had to curse out billing as well.  Just send the damn bill in the mail.  I don't have to pay anything now and I'm not going to.  Leave me alone can't you see I'm trying to breast feed my baby.

  • RRMC doesn't have a photographer as far as I know. They have a little kiosk photo station thingie where you go and you can slide the bassinet they roll your newborn around in right under it. Sort of a mini baby photomat. You order right there from the kiosk. At least that's what they had when DD was born, I haven't looked lately. I'll let y'all know soon hopefully!

Just about everyone has their own camera these days. Unless a newborn photographer is particularly skilled and or provides nice editing or really cute props, I see no need for them in todays hospitals.

  • They came by and offered us pictures, we turned them down. ?They were just your average "baby laying in the bassinet" shots. ?We could do those ourselves.

  • All 7 of us kids have our "first picture" in the bassinet at the hospital.  I've always loved those little baby pictures!

So yes, I did buy them both times with my girls, although I must admit neither girl took a good picture for them.  We had nice photographers come by.  (NAMC and then Womens in Houston)

  • she came by first and asked if it was ok to take pictures and that she'd be back. she came back i think the next day. Our photographer was really great. she took all sorts of shots of DD and us. We didn't buy any of the pictures. but all the pictures were on a website and we sent that link to our friends and family. they loved being able to see pictures so soon. then the company even sent us a free "birth certificate" with DD's picture on it. i'm glad we did it.

  • A girl came by when we were at NAMC PP and gave us a flier and told us she could take DS's picture. We didn't get any taken though. She came back a second time to make sure we didn't want any taken.

  • We got suckered in by the photographer at Seton and paid $$ for not horrible, not great pictures. They had a little studio set up in the nursery and we did some naked and some clothed pictures.

Here's my blog post with the pictures we got: https://matahouse.blogspot.com/2009/04/newborn-photosfinally.html

I wrote that I was annoyed that it took so long because we were told we would have the pictures in two weeks max and it took a month. In retrospect, that's not long, but at the time, it seemed like forever!
  • I'll be delivering at Seton and they have some partnership with some studio to come in and take pictures.  They gave us the info regarding packages and pricing when we went on the hospital tour on Sunday.
  • St. Davids used to do this--I declined with my firstdaughter 3 years ago. Now they don't do it anymore--said most people were opting out. Seriously, the day after birth is not very pretty for baby or mama! I would barely let DH take pics!!
