What is the reason for losing weight during pregnancy? (Besides the obvious, you're building a baby thing...) I am getting plenty of calories (more than pre-preg) and I have dropped quite a bit... I physically do not feel like I can eat anymore in a day though...
I was overweight pre-preg...and..well, okay, let's just talk numbers:
Pre-Preg: 240 (roughly, I did fluctuate by 3 pounds either way all summer)
End of 1st Tri: 220
Week 24: 230
Yesterday/ Today: 225/ 221
I am confused. I eat, I don't get that much exercise (like, I basically live on my couch), and I drink sugary drinks. There is no way I feasibly dropped 4 pounds between yesterday and today, so somebody's scale is wrong, but my clothes are all starting to be really big, and now I am wondering wtf is going on...Any ideas?
Re: Almost Offensively Stupid Weight Question
I've had similar weight loss during pregnancy except mine was a chunk of weight loss in the beginning. In 1 month I lost 20 lbs and I did nothing different. I didn't work out and I ate when I wasn't nauseous. This perplexed my doc too and she ended up doing blood work on my thyroid and she said that the numbers "don't make sense" (meaning I don't have a hypo or hyper thyroid, the numbers on the blood work just don't match up to anything medically). You could have your doc test your thyroid to see if it something like that. Otherwise as long as you and baby are healthy, there shouldn't be too much concern for the weight loss.
Pregnancy can be perplexing at times!
I know you mentioned the sugary drinks but are you eating differently otherwise? Little things really add up so if you used to enjoy a venti frappacino every morning and you don't anymore, there's a ton of calories. If you used to have pepperoni pizza all the time but now you crave strawberries ... stuff like that will make all the difference.
I craved really healthy things early on in both my pregnancies but seeing as how I just ate M&Ms staright out of the peanut butter jar, I am OVER that. Ugh. At least I can claim there is protein in peanut butter. I'm ashamed of myself.
It sounds like the HH has spun your metabolism into overdrive. That kid is sucking the life out of you already
When your pregnant your baby literally acts like a parasite (of sorts). For example, if you have a calcium deficiency your baby will take calcium from your bones. Baby comes first.
If you aren't eating well, maybe baby is taking everything he/she needs from your body and it's causing your metabolism to kick in at a faster rate?
I was actually dieting pre-preg (to no avail, I might add). I was on WW.
... Could this have something to do with me stopping hormonal birth control? I gained a LOT of weight after going on Nuvaring, and I didn't discontinue using it until 9 weeks (didn't know I was pregnant). I lost the 20 original pounds almost immediately afterward, but I blamed m/s...
I also wondered about a thyroid issue.
Do you ever spill ketones in your urine, when they check at your office visits? That would be an indicator that you aren't getting enough calories, or enough carbohydrates.
Hmm.. I got no clue. I could ask, but they have never said anything was abnormal with my urine or blood (besides anemia, which went away after 1st tri).
This is entirely possible.
Also, what the PP said: have you had your thyroid checked?
Nope.
Well, I did pre-preg, but I never went back and got the results from the test.. Lol
Shorty, did you gain weight after going on nuvaring?
I seriously gained almost 50 pounds in a matter of 6 months. It was awful. I blamed depression (a good friend committed suicide the day before I got on bc) but I am starting to think a lot more of it was hormones than I originally suspected...
It's not uncommon to lose weight if you started out overweight. If your doc isn't concerned, I wouldn't worry too much.
What are your docs suggesting? I found good luck with ensure during my first trimester. You can try the weight gain version as a supplement--lots of vitamins and calories.
That's the thing though... My doc IS concerned. If I don't gain weight in the next two weeks, he's putting me on a special diet. I am not pleased.
I find that eating entire Jello molds every 2-3 days has worked nicely for me.
The french fries covered in mustard haven't hurt, either.
Lmao.
I guess I will just pig out for the next two weeks and see what happens. I hate to do that, 'cause the fat girl in me says, "But you're losing weight! For the first time EVER! DO NOT STOP!" But the pregnant mommy-to-be in me says, "Yeah, you're losing weight...that should go to feeding your baby, you dumb b!tch. But feeding him junk food isn't good either, so eat your spinach."
That's the spirit! And I don't like spinach either...unless it is part of a spinach and artichoke dip...mmmm....
You can get in a lot of calories by adding fat to what you can (butter on toast, peanut butter with veggies, etc.) and using full fat versions of stuff.
Gosh, I think I would be really skilled at coming up with a weight gain plan. Let me know if you want me to take a crack at it.
I wish I was like that if I have a waffle I add peanut butter to it if I eat veggies I add loads of butter LOL I used to eat whatever I want and still be really skinny though my old boss used to joke that I had a hollow leg then I got on BCP and skyrocketed!
I don't really have an answer - but do you think it could be muscle loss? I've ended up with a loss of 2 lbs at my appt today, but my doc says it's no big deal and to continue to eat and be active - unfortunately, I haven't been very active (heck, I took yesterday off and proceeded to spend the whole day in bed) so I fear my weight loss might be muscle loss.
I have not gained much (but never lost any either) and have not exercised and have not been watching what I eat. I was wondering why I have not gained more and I decided (whether it is true or not, I don't know) that maybe I am losing muscle mass, which weighs more than fat.
I have actually noticed that I am weaker than before, not like a ton weaker, but things seems heavier to me than before, but like my arms are skinnier, no little muscle I used to have.
Which I don't like! Maybe I should have been exercising all along...whoops!
Anyhow, that is my theory.
