Bed Rest and Disability

Hey ladies,

So I work for a very small floral shop and we don't have any benefits.  I asked about disability and my employer said she didn't have any but that I might be able to get it through my insurance.

I spoke with my insurance company today and I do not have any type of coverage for it.

What is my next step? I'm freaking out a little bit!

I live in Wisconsin, if that helps...

Re: Bed Rest and Disability

  • Does Wisconsin have a state disability program that you pay into through your taxes?

If not, and I might be mistaken, but I think you just go out unpaid.  I think FMLA will protect your job while you are out (unpaid) but the employer only has to follow FMLA if there are more than 50 employees.

I hope I am wrong here.  Hopefully someone else will have a better answer.  :)

  • Thanks for replying. I do not fall under FMLA b/c I am one of the 2 full time employees....

I do not believe we pay into anything through our taxes.

  • i would guess that you would have to buy short term disability coverage but they might not let you because you are already pregnant. maybe social security disability would pay you benifits?
  • I am also in WI, but my job qualifies for FMLA and I've been paying into a supplemental disability plan.

I wish I knew of an option for you...if your job lets you go unpaid you may qualify for WIC or BadgerCare? Just an idea.

  • If you do not have a state sponsored plan and your employer doesn't have a plan for you, and if you are not currently paying into STD...well, you're kind of #$#@ out of luck.  Most STD plans wouldn't take you now due to the fact that it would be a pre-existing condition.  But call around and see if you can find one.

You don't have FMLA (which is unpaid anyway) so I would just talk to your employer and see if you can work something out.  What were you planning on doing for maternity leave?

Good luck.  I was on bed rest for 2 months, but luckily my employer paid into a STD plan for me.  My FMLA did run out, but I had a state sponsored maternity protection plan (I'm in MA) which will protect me now that I had my babies.
