transitioning from Infant carriers to Convertible ....

Re: Tell me about ....

  • Gibby is in a convertibe carseat already- has been since the end of Oct - he was just too heavy for me to lift in the seat to get in the car.  Gray is still in the infant seat- b/c it's so nice to have at least one in there still and he's a lot lighter.

The issue with taking them out of the infant seat at a young age is that they usually can't sit well on their own yet- so going out to eat is an issue (because they have a hard time in high chairs- and won't want to sit in them long b/c they get tired)... and shopping - though, i do fine with both twins sitting in the top seat of the shopping cart, propped up by some blankets.

getting them to/from the car will be a lot harder with 2 out of the infant seat.  Right now i can carry gibby in my arm and hold Gray with my hand, easily put him down to open the door with the key, etc--- having 2 babies to carry in will mean going back and forth to get in the house when i'm alone.

we don't eat out really anymore- so that's not an issue for us this time- but it was when we switched Griffin at 5mo.

  • Like Goldie stated, it's MUCH more convenient to have them in the infant seat.  I remember right after I had DS I thought that it was such a PITA to have to get out and carry his seat around (since I was always used to just hopping out of the car and running in somewhere really quick.  When I switched him to a convertible seat I realized how convenient the infant seat was in comparison (now I see how convenient it was to just have him in the convertible seat and not have to worry about infant seats or soon to be 3 in convertible seats).  This time I will definitely wait until the last possible second to switch the boys out of the infant seat.  GL.
  • We waited until our girls were over 1 year before switching to a convertible seat. I agree with the PP's, that it is really convenient to leave them in the infant carrier as long as you can because you can just carry it around with you.  I could also get them in & out of the van by myself quicker, because I'd just set one seat on the ground while I put the other one in or out, whereas now I have to carry one girl in the house & set her down somewhere & then run back outside to get the other one!
