OB Doesn't Start "Checking" Until 38 to 39 Weeks?

I had an appointment today and I was asking my doctor what to expect at our upcoming appointments.

He said that he doesn't start checking for dilation and effacement until 38 or 39 weeks....

Anyone else's doctors doing this? :(

Re: OB Doesn't Start "Checking" Until 38 to 39 Weeks?

  • My first was last week at 38 weeks. She said she normally doesn't do them until 40 weeks unless the patient has been having contractions or other signs of progress.

  • My doctor doesn't either, but said she'd be willing to check at 37 weeks if I wanted it.

  • I would honestly say I would like to be checked starting at 36 weeks and tell them that everyone in your family has gone early or something because that is just crazy to wait that long. My friend's doctor wasn't going to check her until 38 weeks but at 37 she demanded it and they said OMG your dilated so much that you should probably get on over to L & D!

  • My doctor starts at 37 1/2 weeks but since my apts are on the exact days i.e. 37, 38, 39.... today will be my first check since my GBS at 35 weeks when I had absolutely no progress.
  • Mine checked at 35.5 weeks when she did the GBS test...after that it was optional untill this last apointment at 38 weeks.

  • I was told the same thing that typically they start checking at 38 weeks. HOWEVER, I think that's a case by case basis. I'm definitely planning on asking my OB to do an internal this Friday. She'll already be down in that region for the GBS test. My work keeps buggin me about progress and the baby dropped...so. We'll see!

  • My OB didn't do an internal until 38 weeks (but I didn't have a 37 week appointment because of Thanksgiving so I'm not sure if he would have checked at that point or not)... immediately after checking me though he went on to explain to me (as I'd heard before) that it doesn't really make a difference how far dilated or effaced I am... I could go into labor that day or 4 weeks later.  I guess it's nice to know if your body is doing something, but the truth is that it won't really tell you anything at all
  • I think thats pretty typical. I just had an internal at my 37 week appointment, but my MW made it clear thats just to establish a "baseline". I was completely closed.

  • Well.  I got *** to plan. LOL  And I need to know how far dilated I am.

I work from home but I have to go in on the first of the month to get work done - stuff that I HAVE To have done around the first of the month and I have to be in the office for.

Being that I'm due on Feb. 3rd, I figured at 36 weeks and 37 weeks, I'd get an idea as to whether I had to reschedule and get my office visit in early, etc.

    GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I thought everybody started getting checked at 36.... :(

  • Mine started at 36 weeks unless you had cramping before, which I did, so I started at 35 weeks.
  • Mine starts at 36 weeks, and he actually offered to check at my 34-week appointment. I turned him down because I've had sooo many contractions, and I think I'd be bummed if I'd had no progress.

  • My doc didnt' want to check me this week since i am in so much pain..she did the strep b test even though i am having a c-section but told me she would check the cervix next week..
  • Yup.  I thought I'd have one last week but he just did my GBS test.

Had an appointment this morning... told me that I'm GBS+, but no internal until 38 weeks.

My concern is that I'll have my 37 week appt next Wed but then no appointment for 2 WEEKS due to his holiday vacation... meaning I won't get an internal until 39 weeks!  UGH!!!

  • 37 weeks for me, but I am being induced at 39, so I guess she is starting a little early with me. Your doc is pretty normal with starting to check. There really isn't really a reason to check any earlier.
  • Yep, and I really would rather not get checked at all.  It doesn't mean anything either way.

  • Yep mine was the same way first check was at 38 weeks and just had my 2nd one at 39.
  • 40 weeks here...and i'm totally fine with that.
  • It's "nice to know" but not really that indicative of when you'll go into labor., as I've heard it  DH's cousin was dilated 3 cm for at least 3 weeks before finally going into labor and I think knowing that drove her nuts and made her more anxious.

  • Mine starts internals at 37 weeks (full term) but, patients can refuse if they choose.

  • I don't remember when my dr checked me first with Hannah, but I want to say it was only once at 39-40 weeks or so, I know it was only once in the office. I ended up being induced at 41.5 weeks with her.

Not sure if he will check at my appt on Friday.  He's pretty non invasive all around and I like that.

  • My doc waits until 38 weeks to check too.  It's one less thing to stress about - and she times it with the GBS swab which occurs at the same time.

    Ditto this.

I'd actually prefer not to be checked until way later.

  • Wow my dr just did one at my 28 week check up. I am hoping that they dont do it again for a long time...it hurt like crazy and I cramped all day afterward. I am opting out if they try to do another one next time. At least not until its closer to my due date when I really want some progress. (cross my fingers) I havent had any PTL probs this time around. (bedrest with my first and breathine (sp?) for 4 months with my second then ended up going over due. I hate internals.
  • Yup!  I have my first internal at my appt tomorrow.

  • My first one is at my appointment tomorrow!
  • That's when mine start it!
  • Honestly, in many cases, they really don't tell you much. You could go in at 36 weeks and be 2 centimeters and stay there until 41 weeks or you could be completely closed and go into labor a week later. In fact, in the UK, they routinely don't check until after your due date for this reason.

In terms of work, I would just plan on your normal schedule (going in early if you start feeling uncomfortable) and if you go into labor early, so be it.

You're not going to drop a baby out of you without other signs of labor, so in general, I just wouldn't think too much about it. Plus, keep in mind that average first time gestation is 41 weeks 2 days. You **might** go early, but there's a much better chance of you going beyond your due date.

Not sure what my OB's plans are. I didn't get checked at 36 weeks and am not sure if I will at today's visit. I'd rather like to wait if possible, actually.

  • My midwife won't do an internal exam until I'm in labour. She doesn't see the point in doing them before hand unless I go over term.

  • Mine started at 35 weeks & it's annoying to me! I know there's no progress & I'm having a c-sec around 38-39 weeks so I don't plan on having any progress. Of course there's no telling, but I hate getting undressed every week for her to say "nope- you're closed".
