2nd Trimester

Breastfeeding classes

How necessary are they? In particular, how necessary are they before the baby is born? Is it ridiculous of me to think that I can see how it goes in the hospital and when we first get home, and then take a class if I have problems?

Re: Breastfeeding classes

  • I thought our breastfeeding class was wonderful especially since DH was able to learn so much, which came in handy during first few weeks. Sometimes it took both of us to make sure DD's latch was correct.

  • i have signed up for one.  last night i was doing some research on b'feeding preparation and everything i read said it's better to educate yourself ahead of time rather than trying to just wing it when the baby arrives.  the more knowledge you go in with, the less overwhelming it may be.

  • Maybe I'm incredibly naive, but I'm not taking one. To me it seems like cart before the horse kind of thing. The hospital has lactation consultants available after birth, which I plan on taking advantage of. I also plan on doing some of my own research beforehand.

I've talked to people on both sides of the fence- some people say they were great, some people say they weren't worth it. I know in my area, it's not overly cheap. I also feel bad making my husband attend-  I get that he will likely need to assist, but making him take an entire weekend class about how my boobs will feed the baby seems like torture.

  • i signed up for a BF'ing class during my first pregnancy but ended up not being able to go because something else came up... I however was able to BF DD without any trouble just an hour after she was born... I BF DD until she was six months old without any difficulties Smile
  • I never took the class. The lactation specialist visited me in the hospital and was wonderful. Of course, DD was a natural and latched on right away (even after being bottle fed in the NICU for 2 days).
