Ok I was looking at these again because I'm still on the fence. I know how to use the throw away kind, but these cloth ones are so foreign to me.
How many cloth diapers would you need to start out with?
For the inserts...How many of these do you recommend getting and these are they ones you might need to buy again?
Do you use both cloth diapers and the throw away kind for various reasons/occasions or do you just strictly stick to cloth?
Thanks
Re: back to cloth diapers
Yea for looking into cloth!! We switched with DD2 and we love it. It has saved us SOOO much money and I don't have to feel bad about the bags and bags of diapers going into the land fills.
Anyway, in the beginning you will need more diapers becuase they go more often. I would say plan on 10 a day (a 24 hour period) and then figure out how often you want to do laundry from that. I would say get at least 2 dozen, but probably closer to 3 so you're not constantly doing laundry in the beginning.
We didn't use any with inserts in the beginning. We use prefolds with covers and snappies and then some fitteds with covers. Both were super easy to use and are 2 of the cheapest ways to go.
Now we use prefolds (almost out of them though) and pockets with inserts. They are one size diapers so we should be set here on out.
We always keep some disposables in the house for different things (I forget to do laundry, a bad rash, when we go out of town, etc.), but mainly use cloth.
Check out https://jilliansdrawers.com/ and look at her cloth diapering tutorial. She breaks it down really well of what each kind is and why you might want to try those, etc.
And I'll also say you'll find lots of good info on the eco friendly board.
Good luck!
We used Kissaluvs and prefold diapers with Thirsties covers during the newborn stage. We had 12 of each diaper and 3 covers, and it wasn't enough for us most days. DD pooped all the time, and I was recovering from a c/s, so it may not be as challenging for everyone. We used both cloth and disposable for the first 5 weeks. (We used disposable while in the hospital for 3 days.) By 5 weeks, DD started pooping less and I was able to keep up with laundry more.
By 6 weeks, DD started fitting into the Bum Genius pocket diapers. I quit using my newborn prefolds, but we continued to use the Kissaluvs until DD was about 3 months old. Since then, we've been using mostly Bum Genius and we also have 5 FuzziBunz. Over time, I've built my diaper stash to 30 BGs.
We use some rice paper liners and now some of the Flip disposable inserts for days we need to use diaper cream. I love my cloth diapers. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
We will probably get 24ish prefolds for the newborn stage. I'm still not sure how many covers to get.
Though I'd love to exclusively CD, we will probably use disposables for when we are out and about or traveling.
Check out the EFF board. Also theecofriendlyfamily.blogspot.com has some great info on CD.
I predict that you'll end up loving your CDs so much that you try to avoid disposables as much as possible.
I understand that it's difficult if you're traveling for more than a couple days, but I'm always afraid of poop blowouts when DD isn't in her fluffy butt diapers. We use cloth and just bring wetbags for shorter trips.
I plan to use Gro baby: https://www.thenaturalbabyco.com/grobaby?-ic-11_16.html
They also have a disposable liner as an option.
We have an entire cloth diaper STORE near me! https://www.diaperlab.com :]
