2nd Trimester

How important are kegels really?

Anything I've read strongly encourages doing kegels & about 10 sets/day.  They're not hard to do, just hard to remember to do.  I don't think I've ever heard my family or friends tell me to do them, and none of them seem to have any issues post baby.  I'm wondering, especially from 2nd time + moms, do I really need to do them?

  • well I didnt do them really. I never could be remember, or I was too lazy... they are actually pretty tiring somehow, especially in the 3rd tri.

The only time I have noticed issues is now with being pregnant again. TMI: Every single time I sneeze, I pee a little. I dont full-blown pee myself, but some does come out.   So Im going to try harder to do them this time.

  • this is my first preg. i pee a little when i sneeze too. never did kegals before and i started doing them randomly when i found out i am preg via bumpie suggestions. however im still peeing and sneezing...so i dont know really how helpful they are. maybe bring it up to your doc? my doc never mentioned them to me....anyones doc bring it up to them?

Yeah, I've been much more diligent about them lately. I usually hold my sneezes in and I did it last week and came closer than I'd like to peeing. I decided they're worth it, and am reminded to do them daily since I sneeze at least once a day.

  • Yes, they're important.  They're not so important that you need to set an alarm to do them every day, but don't intentionally blow them off either.

I sometimes pee when I sneeze, puke, orgasm, or cough too hard.  Kegels will also help you get your pelvic floor muscles back into shape faster after birth, which in turns help sex retain its good feeling.

  • Kegal excercises are actually important and can be helpful within labor not only after. Doing kegal exercises helps maintain proper tone in the pelvic floor or pubococcygeus muscle. Poor tone may cause: incontinence-wetting pants when coughing, sneezing, etc.; discomfort; lack of sensation during intercourse; unusual pain during birth; premature flexion of baby's head, prolonged second stage laborl damage to muscle and feeling of pressure. The kegal muscle controls the urethra, vagina and rectum and is responsible for the female sexual climax plus when looking at female anatomy you will see that the baby must pass through this muscle during secon stage having a strong muscle can help this stage go faster and more smoothly...obviously remembering to do them is difficult but if you think about it--it is worth doing
