BFing Question..(For those that went to 12 months)

I know it is only natural, but Max seems to be wanting to BF less and less. When he does nurse, it is off both sides (which are very full), but he only does it about 4 or 5 times a day now. When did your child start to self-wean, and how many feedings did you do at the 8-9 month mark

ETA: Pumpers can definately answer this question, however I have no idea how many oz he is getting, so it may not help me much. I need the amount of times they fed, not necessarily the oz. TIA!

Re: BFing Question..(For those that went to 12 months)

  • Around the 8-9 month mark Isa was bf-ing 4-5 times per day. Morning, before both naps, bedtime, and once at night if she woke up. Around 10 months, I stopped BFing at night and in the morning, so we went down to 3x, and now we are down to just before bed. We will wean from that at the end of the month and I will have my body back! :)  Sounds like Max is right on track.

  • Were were at about every 3 hours at that point, and maybe once during the night. Plus we were doing solids for two meals. By 12 months we were at once a day. I really started to notice a difference (slowing down) around 11 months.

  • what you are describing seems normal... he's eating solids, he's more efficient at nursing, and he's just busier.   His nursing will come and go.  He'll nurse more when he's teething or needing more mommy time.  He'll nurse less when he's busy learning to walk or something.  I think the last few months (like 15-17) Ben only nursed 2 times a day.  I finally had to just call it quits and make it stop b/c I got sick of it.   So even though he was barely doing it, he wasnt' weaning himself really - he just got what he needed.

  • Looks like Kaylin was at 5-6 times per day at 8 months. At 9 months, I stopped nursing at night so we were down to 5 feedings per day. At 10 months, she was eating mostly table foods and her desire to BF started to drop. She would nurse 3-4 times per day. By 12 months, she was nursing only morning and evening. We dropped one more feeding at 13 months and weaned completely at 14 months.

Sounds like he is right on schedule.

  • Ditto Jill.  They are into looking at everything else and the last thing they want is to sit still to nurse!  (except at night)

It's normal for them to nurse less, but they are still getting enough.  I can't remember how many times a day at that age, but what Justine wrote seemed like us too.  At 1 year, we we're down to 2 or 3x a day.  (am, pm and naptime)

  • At 8 months my dd was bf 5x a day and at 9 months I took one feeding away and made it down to 4x a day.  She's now 11 months and I'm feeding her 3x a day (morning, one nap, and before bed) and will probably try to cut the afternoon one out.  It'll just be easier for me to gradually wean her.  If she could choose she'd probably be feeding 5x a day so I just have to be mindful to have snacks/solid foods for her when she wakes up from naps.
