You think that is bad, when I worked as a CNA at a nursing home, one of the nurses (who couldn't have been much older than 50) was telling us that when she was a CNA they would make fun of the other CNAs who wore gloves to clean up a resident (ie change a poopy diaper). How gross is that!

This doesn't answer your question, but they used to insert two magnets in there that would send a reading to a machine. The biggest problem was that once they were too far apart, the magnets would fall out. This is what my nurse told me they did in the 80s. My question to her still stands,, you'd think that they would come up with something more technological to figure out dilation and effacement.
Prior to the late 19th century it hadn't even occurred to the the medical community that microorganisms could cause disease, so they wouldn't have used anything. Fun fun.
Gloves have been around a loooong time. I think women just birthed at home or squatted in whatever field they were in and had at it. Further proof that internals probably aren't really necessary to a pregnancy unless you're curious. I'm considering deferring them unless something seems amiss with the baby based on other stuff (u/s, nonstress test, etc., sine I'm GD). If he gets big early or acts weird, my MW is welcome to do an internal to find out if I've made any progress at that point -- otherwise I'd like things to happen in their own time. I may revisit that feeling later on when I'm huge and miserable!
Re: how did they do internals before they invented
