On Black Friday, I bought DH a Saws All. He's been talking about how much he wants one for months. Last week, I was talking to MIL about DH's Christmas list and mentioned to her that I had bought the Saws All. She says, "Well, I'm getting him a cordless drill and as part of the sale, it comes with a Saws All attachment, so he won't really need the one you bought since it's corded."
Mine is sitting under our tree already wrapped.

Re: MIL Stealing Christmas Present Idea (Clickly Poll included)
I vote for the stabbing!!
I'd probably just give him the one I bought Christmas morning, and then later say something to him about thinking MIL bought him the same thing...puppy dog eyes, pout pout...even though I told her that's what I was getting you...more puppy dog eyes, shrug. Sad face.
Then when he opens said gift from MIL, more puppy dog eyes, big sigh.
Stab for sure!!!
I would really keep the one under the tree and let him decide. I would also (because I am a wee bit evil) make sure that he opened my gift first!
Do you know why he wants the Saws All? (If it's possible to have a crush on a powertool, I have one on reciprocating saws... I don't know why!)
The reason I ask is DH always tells me that cordless never has as much power as corded, so he may find that a cordless one (esp. one that was a "Gift with Purchase" isn't powerful enough for his needs...)
I'd let him know, privately that you decided to keep your (better) one for just that reason, but that if he wants to swap it out, you won't be hurt.
My dh is a tool whore, so he'd much prefer a "real" saws all to a saws all attachement to a drill.
AND, a cordless saws all (unless she really spent major $) is going to be much weaker than the corded one. Dh LOVES his corded one and doesn't find the cord to be an inconvenience...he prefers the power to the convenience.
Also, his opinon on those tools with multiple attachments that do different things is that they aren't as good as those that serve one purpose...since they're usually lower quality to be able to do so much for the $. He calls them "Home owner specials" since no "real contractor" would use them. LOL!
But that's just his opinion...and he's a snob.
See my post above!

Sawzalls (aka reciprocating saw) really are best when they are their own entity.
I am assuming the drill and saw she got basically both work off the same battery, which is fine and dandy...but unless she spent beaucoup bucks and got the dewalt the saw attachment probably won't even come close to comparing to yours. Even the battery powered dewalt sawzalls are not as powerful and long lasting as the corded sawzalls.
Sorry...I am kind of a tool whore myself. I LOVE my sawzall and honestly...that was one item I insisted on having as corded. I also prefer circular saws that are corded...just sturdier and they tend to last a lot longer and cut so much better.
I would make sure your present to him is opened first and let him be happy and excited over it...then let MIL's gift be opened...I am sure he will focus on the drill portion of that present because cordless drills are great...cordless sawzalls are novelty.
Money Matters The other half's blog.
EJ is growing up too fast!
LOL I saw that right after I posted!
Stab her. Then give him your (way better) saw that he'll love more in the long run.
Dude, MILs SUCK!!!! AHH! I'm haunted by my MIL stealing gift idea story still. And it's been 2 1/2 years. Grrrrr....
Thanks so much for confirmation that I did get the better tool. I have to say I'm relieved to see that no one thinks I should return mine. I didn't know when I'd actually have time to do that. I'm starting to feel better about the whole situation now.
He will definitely open mine first. We do our family presents at our house first and then head to MIL's later in the day to do those presents and dinner. I'll have plenty of time to use those sad puppy dog eyes. Thanks ladies! I knew y'all would help me to feel better about this.
I voted for keep. because as much as I love our cordless stuff, the power isn't nearly as awesome as the plugged in versions. yeah the attachment will be convenient for little jobs, but when you need super power for a little longer time period....the cord wins.
I hate when they (mil's) do that.
I say keep yours and still give it to DH... Then, "accidentally" saw her saws all w/ the one you got DH.... hehehe.... but, I am evil...
BTW - that is really rotten of MIL....
Ditto this exactly. Just MAKE SURE he opens your gift first before MIL is around. Then he will be less excited opening MIL's gift...so passive aggressive but I love it!
I vote stab.
Could you talk to her and explain you got a great deal on yours and see if she would return it...Maybe even give her a idea of what to get?
Or if she wont
If he will open yours first you could tell him afterwards about the MIL thing that she got it too.. saying its just so he can still act happy with hers!
Or
Just let him open hers afterwards and laugh and point out how funny cuz he already has a saws all!
