how likely is it to have a kid potty trained by 3?

tyler first started going #2 on the potty at 18 months which i know is super young. then he regressed and wanted nothing to do with it - which has basically been our story since then (he is now 29 months) - a ton of interest to zero interest, back and forth.

the two preschools that i would love to have him in next year require them to be potty trained by 3. how likely is it that kids are potty trained by 3?

our pedi said the average is 2 years 9 months for boys, but that is also when i will be due with baby #2, so i am sure that will be a huge change for dc.

the deposits i put on the preschools can be refunded in july if he isnt potty trained then...just wanted to get an idea from some other moms if they thought it was possible.

thanks!

  • It's totally possible. Go for it!

  • I think its possible!! Take a week & stay as close to home as possible, reminding him all the time & go from there! K potty trained the sumer before she turned 2 - with the warm weather it was easy. She wanted to run around naked all?the?time & would get this look about her when she had to go.

    GL!!!?

  • I thought 3 was the magic age?  I'll let you know!  Carter will be 3 in January (5-6 weeks) and is 0% potty trained.  Hoping to work on it during the next couple of weeks when he'll be home from school for the holidays. He has shown a ton of interest in the past too, but our recent attempts haven't been very successful.

Deadlines drive behavior though, and I don't really have one in my case.  You do have a deadline for school so I'm sure you can make it happen.  I say go for it!

  • I think so! My sisters and I were all trained before we turned two, so I think 3 is great for boys. My nephew wasn't interested in potty training at all, but then a couple months before he turned 3, he just got tired of wearing diapers, and it only took a week or so to get him trained.

  • DS will be 3 in January and he has been potty trained for about a month and a half.  He still wears diapers at nighttime, but during the day he is in underwear and stays dry.

    So it is very possible!

  • I'm thinking it's totally possible.  I wanted Emmy in a preschool in Sept and they were all saying she had to be potty trained.  I pretty much started in August and she was 2 years 9 months and she was trained pretty fast.  Granted she doesn't go to the bathroom at all at preschool, yes that girl holds it ALL DAY.  But she has only had 2 accidents at school.
  • totally depends on your kid.  We started Ryan at 18 months when he started showing real interest, he gave up after the baby was born (when he was 2) and didn't completely PT until he was 3.5

Most good Montessoris don't have an age limit for kids to PT, so you might want to look into that if need be.

  • totally possible but also depends on your child. Good luck!

  • I say it is possible but the kid has to be interested to really get it going. Getting the book Once Upon a Potty really got Ori interested. She was potty trained about 2 weeks after turning 2.
