s/o: Tips for a long driving trip with a baby

We are making the very long drive home for the holidays.  This will be the longest we've been in the car with DD, ever.  Luckily, she likes car rides but I am super nervous about the drive.  I think I am more nervous for this trip than I was for our first flight a couple of weeks back!

Any tips on how to survive very long car rides with a baby?  Thanks!

  • How long are we talking here?
    Dear Bump: You suck.

  • At that age, she'll be an easy traveling companioin.  Stop every couple hours and let her crawl around.  You can make her bottles and give her snacks in the car, if someone is sitting in the back with her.   Bring some toys for her to play with - she may spend a lot of time napping, too.

Yeah, we're prepared for it to take MUCH longer than usual.  But, I just worry about how this will all go down with a babe in the car this time.

  • Take lots of breaks and bring some new toys.  I would time a break just before nap time so she can get out and move around and then settle back in for a nice nap.  And be sure you've done everything you need to do so you don't have to stop while she's sleeping.
  • Glad you posted this! I am anxious to see the tips. We are going to Alabama....13 freakin hours!
  • We usually take turns sitting in the back with DD to help keep her entertained.  Good luck to you!

  • In my experience, it just depends on DD's mood. Sometimes when we drive to Corpus Christi (3 1/2 hours) it takes 5 hours due to her being extra fussy. But then we went to Baton Rouge (10 1/2 hours) and she was a saint. I think she had one breakdown and we pulled over and nursed rather then bottled fed and we were back on the road within 20 minutes.

I know my answer does not include any tips so its no help, but that's my experience. Random. If you find any tricks after your trip please share :)
