nursing bra sizing

I am a lurker for now, but will probably be on more once my babies arrive. I'm wondering if I should buy nursing bras based on the size that I am now or wait until after the babies are here and see what size I am. I know your breasts initially become engorged right after birth, but then once you start BFing what size are they...meaning about prebirth size, bigger, smaller etc.

Re: nursing bra sizing

  • I'd wait. Generally the 'rule' is you are 1 cup size bigger while nursing. I am about 4 cup sizes above my pre-pg size though even now 11 months into nursing DS.

My advice for what it's worth is to get 1-2 'sleep' style bras (motherhood, target, etc carry these) and/or 1-2 nursing tanks. These are both sized  in S/M/L rather than 'cup' sizes, and will hold you over the first couple of weeks until you get fitted for real bras.

  • Ditto PPer. I bought 2 tanks and one sleep bra, then waited till my milk came in and bought 2 more real bras, then around 2 months when I felt like they really settled into a 'final' size, I bought 2 more real bras. My initial engorgement put me up about 2.5 cup sizes above my pre-preg size, and now I'd say I'm 1.5-2 cup sizes above it. (I was small to begin with.)
  • Agree w/pp, start with nursing tanks and sleep bras.  I went from 34C pre-preg to 36C after my milk came in and it's stayed the same.  Everyone's different so the nursing tanks are great to hold you over.
