1st Trimester

What should I expect at 1st appt. & u/s?

I have an u/s and first appointment with my OB's midwife scheduled at 8 1/2 weeks (Dec. 30th).  Could you ladies tell me what to expect?

I have heard there's a lot of questions about family medical histories also.  What sort of things should I know?

I was hoping to wait until after the u/s to tell our families, but if there's important stuff I need to know from them, we may just spill the beans on Christmas.

Thanks ladies!

  • From the info I have gathered here, everyone's first appt is different. I would ask the doctor's nurse. At my 8 week appt, they did an exam, took some cultures, gave me an u/s, and took endless amounts of tubes of blood. Oh, and I peed in a cup to test my protein.

  • Mine was different because my first OB appt was at 10 weeks. But they ask you a bunch of health questions. They want to know primarily about your family compared to your husband's. (i.e. If anyone in your family had blood pressure- which side of your family was it on, etc)

You have to pee in a cup (at EVERY appointment) and they took about 5 vials of blood. If you haven't had a chlamydia test within a year they will do that (internally) and they'll do an HIV test. They did mine right before I got pregnant at the RE's office and re-did it at my first OB appointment. It's just more blood work.

(btw- your christmas card is in the mail)

  • You have to sit through a ton of health questions, then you have an u/s to check for the heartbeat, and then they take some blood, then they take your blood pressure, and my least favorite, the ole weight check.   It's just a very extensive physical with the fun of an ultrasound thrown in.   I'm hoping the doctor will skip over all the dos and donts for me, since this is my third pregnancy, and I know the drill.  Tomorrow I'm excited because I'm hoping I can talk to them about a tubal ligation after the baby is born.

  • That's right. Can't forget the weight and BMI check.

  • I should have expected you would be a silver poster! :)  Fun for you to find me on here!  Thanks for the info!
