how quickly did your cervix shorten?

The recent posts about shortened cervixes are making me nervous. My last official cervix measurement was 3 weeks ago, when it was 4-4.5cm. I'm hoping it's still good this week so I can finish out my last week at work (I'm stopping work this week b/c our university is on holiday break for the next 2 weeks anyway). Hopefully I'll start having cervix checks every 1-2 weeks now so I won't have to worry as much between appointments.

Anyway, my question is: for those of you with shortened cervix, how long did you go between appts before finding out it was shortened? I'm just curious about how quickly things can change.

Re: how quickly did your cervix shorten?

  • I don't have a shortened cervix, but mine seems to be a gradual decline the further along I get.  I have a cervix check every 2 weeks and mine has gone from 6.5 cm at its best (two months ago) to 4 cm this past week.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Mine has been pretty consistent (until today) at 4.8.  As of today (four days after my last check) it was 3.3.
  • I've had mine checked every two weeks (give or take) and this morning at my appt it was shortening for the first time.  I'm at about 2.5 now, and last time it was closer to 4.5.  I'll go in again on the 23rd - a little earlier than the 2 week mark, but this is due to the holidays.
  • Mine has gone from around 5 to 3.3 over the past 10 weeks. I think they expect it to shorten as the babies get bigger.

  • Sorry I scared you!  I hope everything is fine when you go in.  I am definitely of the "better safe than sorry" school of cervical checking and bedrest.

oh me too! that's why I'd rather have more frequent checks so we can catch any shortening early.

  • I just found out today that I'm at 2.4cm and I'm so worried :(  I'm going to just try to take it easy for awhile, although my doctor said I can still work for now.  I'm going to have to go every 2 weeks to have it monitored.

  • 24w4d - "beautiful" (don't know the exact measurement, but it was just where it ought to have been), no need to stop work unless I felt like it was time.  Decided I should keep working at not even 25 weeks since I was feeling fine.

26w4d - surprise - sent off to the hospital directly from regular doctor appt, put on mag for 48 hours and hospital bedrest with procardia and 3x a day monitoring for shortened cervix with semi-regular (not painful) contractions. (PTL...)  My cervix basically went to 100% effaced and started dilating.  (U/s tech at ob office noticed baby a pushing down when having contractions that were just uncomfortable tightening to me.)

I feel so lucky that I was in for my appointment that day.  I do wish I had stopped work earlier.  I do a lot of walking back and forth and bending and should've taken it a little easier earlier.  I knew that at that day's appointment I was going to request weekly appts starting then, but never expected to stop work so abruptly to go to the hospital for the next 8.5+ weeks!

  • Mine went like this:

    17w 3.7cm

    21w 2.7cm

    23w 2.2cm (bedrest started)

    25w 2.1cm

27w 1.6 cm (plus positive fFN) (Hospital bedrest)

    27.5w .7

    28w - 1 cm dilated 100% effaced?

(I delivered at 32 weeks when my water broke)?

This maybe was more than you wanted to know but it's the progression and I have it all documented in my blog so I thought I would share. Without a doubt have regular cervix length checks. ?

  • I get checked every 2 weeks since 16 weeks.

16 weeks - 24 weeks it was right around 4cm

26 weeks it was more like 3.6 cm but no one seemed worried...I'm sure there's a slight variance in measurement each time they check.

  • I'm sorry I scared you also! I don't even know what mine was at 18w...the peri just said it looked great. Then I had some spotting over the weekend so I went in just shy of 22w and it was at 1.6. I was supposed to go every four weeks for a while. According to the doctor, there's not much rhyme or reason to this. Some people just have a weaker cervix. Also, my babies are both breech and apparently using my cervix as a trampoline and dance floor, so that's not helping!

I'm sure they'll move your cervix checks to every 2 weeks or every week if there is any concern.

  • Mine went from 4 to 1.7 in about at week, which occurred between my 26week and 27week checks. After that, it dropped to 0.8 and I still hung on until 35 weeks 4 days when I was delivered due to high BP.
