Success after IF

Can you EBF and still send LO to daycare?

I want to EBF if possible, but wll most likely be going back to work after 3 months or so. Is this even a remote possibility? If I store as much milk as possible and build up a stash, would they even let me bring it for LO in daycare? Or are most daycare FF only? Anyone know how this works?

  • If you pump, you can keep up your supply just fine.

  • Yup, I know how it works.  We bring milk in bottles and also formula if they have to supplement.

I didn't ever build up a stash because my supply is low.  So sometimes he may get 100% formula, but most times he gets 2/3 breastmilk and 1/3 formula while at daycare.

They are usually flexible and have refrigerators.  Some daycares let you nurse at lunch, but I didn't do this - just pumped at work about 3-5 times a day.

    Good luck!

  • Of course you can. I have for 2 kids.

Daycares absolutely have to take BM.  They cannot dictate what you chose to feed your infant.

  • We EBF and have been successful doing this while DS goes to daycare fulltime.  My daycare has a huge deep freezer so I took in the 200 oz stash I built up over the first 3 months.  If they don't have freezer space, you can totally bring in the amount of milk your LO will drink in a day.  I pump three times a day at work and have had several dips in my supply, but if I add a few pump sessions in the evenings, I'm able to catch up okay.  GL!

  • Of course!  You can build up a little or a big supply and pump at work to keep the milk up and send LO to daycare with bm.
  • My LO isn't in daycare, but I would also like to suggest that you try and pump early on when your supply is getting established. It's tough to add in even one session when it seems like you're feeding the baby 24/7, but it's something I wish I had done so I would have more of a stash now. Right now I only have about 4 back-up bottles, but they're really only for emergencies as I'm always with DD.

  • DD was in daycare for about 6 months (i went back to work after 3 months and then decided to be a stay at home mom when DD was 9 months old).  She never had any formula.  I pumped 3 times a day at work.  When I had a decrease in supply, I started getting up early and pumping so I would have enough milk.  all the daycares I talked to were fine with breastmilk.  I would get the bottles ready for them.  Ours would let us keep an extra frozen bag there in case of emergency.
  • Definitely!  I went back to work when DD was 4.5 months and pumped until she was 14 months (starting mixing it with whole cows milk at 12 months).  When I dropped her off in the morning, I'd bring bottles made up with the BM.
