Is it safe to assume that all food sold at a grocery store is pasteurized? I'm thinking specifically of ice cream, blue cheese salad dressing and other cheeses (cheese spreads, fresh mozzarella, etc).
I've noticed that not all of these products necessarily say pasteurized but I'm wondering if I'm denying myself some things that would be perfectly safe??
TIA
Re: Possibly dumb question about pasteurized food
any dairy product should say it somewhere on the package. US FDA laws require all food coming into the US to be pastiurized so yeah what whatever you want. BUT if you travel you need to be careful and if you get some blue cheese or feta cheese at a local import shop I would double check with them, but big chain grocery stores, everything is pasturized.

In a chain grocery story (not in an import section)? Yes.
Things like salad dressing and ice cream I would never worry about.
As long as it says that it is pasturized it is completely fine. Some imported soft cheeses are not pasturized so it is always a good idea to check the label
Oh those sneaky sneaks. LOL OK, that makes sense. Thanks!
Thanks ladies. I was standing there holding a pint of Ben & Jerry's and a pack of Velveeta and I just couldn't wrap my head around how B&J ice cream could be a bigger threat to my LO's development than the dayglo brick in my other hand!! LOL
Thanks for the clarification, ice cream & salad dressing aisles, here I come! LOL
Most of the cheese at a regular grocery store is fine; you may need to ask about cheeses at Dean and Deluca or other specialty shops. If it is imported it may not be pasteurized.
My Dr. gave me an extra warning about soft cheeses, even though they are pasteurized - esp. blue cheeses. She said there can be extra bacteria in those, so to stick with hard cheeses. Probaby just a step to be extra careful.
I am pretty sure anything bottled is fine.
