2nd Trimester

If you are far away from your hospital

Are you making any special plans or taking any extra precautions to prepare for what will happen when you go into labor?  During work and on the weekends, I am only about 12 minutes away from my hospital.  But during the week, I stay in an apartment in another town that is 50 + minutes from the hospital, and my DH isn't there with me.  I'm paranoid I'll go into labor at the apartment away from my DH and my hospital and I'm just now starting to try to figure out how best to proceed with this.  This is my first child, so I have no idea what to expect and am just trying to figure out whether I think I can handle this on my own from far away or whether I need to figure out something else for the last few weeks.

Re: If you are far away from your hospital

  • From our house my hospital is 50 miles away, but from my parents' house it's only 30 miles.  When I get to full term I'll probably start staying there.  Ah living in the sticks is awesome.  No neighbors, but I might deliver my son on the side of 610.

  • I'm about 25/30 minutes away during no-traffic hours. But during rush hour im about 1/2 to 2hrs away. I have to go into Boston because im high-risk and i have to have lil one at this specific hospital just in case the baby needs to stay in the NICU plus my hospital is right across the street from Childrens
  • I am not far from the hospital, but I wouldn't worry since it's your first baby, and first babies rarely come flying out.

The nurse who taught our childbirth class lived about 45 minutes away from the hospital w/ her 2nd baby.  Part of the drive was over a large suspension bridge over the Chesapeake Bay.  She said she had a kit w/ clamps, blankets, etc. in her car because she worried about giving birth on the bridge in bad beach traffic, but she had him in the hospital.

I also know someone who had their 2nd on the side of a highway @ like 6:30 in the morning... I think that she waited too long to go to the hospital because of the time of day, she probably lives about 20-30 minutes from the hospital.

Oh and I know someone who lives just 10 minutes from the hospital who w/ #2 had the baby in their front hallway...

Still I think these are freak occurrences and not very likely w/ first babies.

  • I'm about an hour away from the hospital if I'm at home, 25 if I'm at work. Either way I asked my doc if this should be a concern and she said rarely do first babies come quickly and that I shouldn't be at all concerned about the drive. So I'm not :)
  • My husband and I live about 30 mins away- most of my worry comes that most years it is still snowy here in April. I am afraid of my husband getting nervous and then not driving carefully.

I would say, don't worry about having your baby too fast but maybe make sure you have someone where you are during the week that would be willing to drive you if you were to go into labor there.

  • My hospital is about an hour away from our house, and it'll likely still be hazardous conditions in March.  If DH can't get on a job closer to home, then we'll work something out with my in-laws and BFF so that there will always be someone nearby to drive me to the hospital if the need arises.

  • in bad morning or 4:00 traffic i live about an hour from the hospital on the base where I will have to deliver.  i have already explained to Dh that if it happens during peak traffic times CALL THE AMBULANCE!!  I'd rather wait a little longer at home & have the baby in a well equipped ambulance than be stuck in traffic.  But, this is my 3rd baby, and I expect it to happen very quickly since #1 took 3 hours (45 mins of hard labor) and #2 only took 1 hour (15 minutes of hard labor).

Wow! was this from your 1st symptoms of labor? My dd came in about 5 hours and I thought that was fast for a first baby. I am nervous for this one because without traffic the hospital is a min. of 50 minutes and with LA traffic, it could be a real nightmare 2 hour drive. I am hoping for another middle of the night onset of labor. Plus with DH having to come home from his office to drive me, all I can say is no labor during the day!

  • I only live about 15 mins from the hospital on base, but im going to have a friend on call so if i need help. I am home alone with DH deployed and i wouldnt want to try driving if i was having contractions.
  • I have been wondering the same thing.  We live 30 minutes from the hospital but if DH is at work he would have to drive 30 minutes home to pick me up and 30 minutes back.  My mom was only in labor for under 2 hours with me so I am hoping this baby comes either on his day off or when my mom is nearby, or in the evening/morning while DH is still home!
  • I live an hour and a half from my Dr.  But he is a specialist who knows my history so I wanted to stay with him.   We are planning to induce me a week early *if i'm still pregnant at that point*  as long as the baby is ready.

  • We live about an hour from the nearest hospital. Our plan is to head in that direction once I decide it is labor. We will probably get a hotel so we don't end up arriving at the hospital too early but also so we have a relaxing place to hang out during the early stages.
