Upstate NY Babies

When to schedule a C/S (wow, long)

So since finding out about possibly needing a c/s....I've been thinking about it non-stop! Not in a negative or positive way really...just trying to process it, I guess.

We've decided to not go into the hospital and try to flip her...I haven't been too impressed with the success rates and personal stories. Our chiro (that we have both gone to for years and DH is close with personally and professionally) hasn't even heard of techniques to help the baby turn. Not to say he is the only opinion we respect - but I feel uncomfortable doing anything that he hasn't even heard of before. So I'm doing my movements and hoping for the best.

But - now I wonder about when we should have this baby. Evan was 5 days early and my OB said chances are this one will be early as well...so I don't want to have an emergency c/s.

How early would you schedule one? My OB said the norm is 39 weeks...so that would be just two days before Evan was born. I know that isn't the greatest to compare it to - but it's all we have. I'd like to add a few more days to that (say 38w5days or something) but part of me feels guilty.

And one more thing - adding a couple more days would bring us to the end of December. Would you schedule your child's b-day for NYE? (We have a bunch of relatives born on NYE actually...and they seem to like it but I feel leary of choosing a birthday that is a holiday) Plus, my family will be in town that week...so if we make it a couple of days sooner they will be able to meet her - which they wouldn't be able to do normally.

And yes, we've already been teased about trying to get the tax write off and trying to be the first baby of 2010...haha! But seriously...it has nothing to do with that - we just want to do what's best and safest!

Any opinions?

  • Definitely a lot to think about. Have you talked with your doctor yet about when he/she thinks would be the best time? From what I've read lately, it's best to wait until after 39 weeks to deliver. So, if it were me, as long as there was no immediate danger to you or baby, I'd try to go at least until then. It seems that would leave you plenty of time to have the baby, then hopefully be settled a bit so you can enjoy ds's birthday. I'd probably be more stressed out about the whole thing if I tried to schedule it during the holidays. I think I'd want that time to just enjoy my family.

  • I actually didn't get a choice on the day.  My OB scheduled it for the day he was at the hospital, which was a Wed.  So we scheduled it 9 days before her due date even though my first was a week late.  She was totally fine and 8lb 1oz!
  • I have no experience with this but  i think having an NYE bday isnt so bad (compared to xmas) and also having it when your family can meet her might be nice- for you and for them...

but uhm I'm totally flipped out because you are the person ahead of me to give birth...so when you do it- it means I'm next...but I digress..

(opps re-read the post- and made a change about the birthdays..)

  • i find the prospect of choosing the birthday of your LO a crazy idea! to me a birthday should be randomly chosen.

if, and that's a huge if, we go for #2 i was told i would have the choice of VBAC or c-section and i already told my Dr. i'm totally going for a c-section... not sure if i would get to choose the date- but i i have to i might resort to putting available dates on slips of paper and pulling one out of a hat!

  • I don't think you should feel guilty at all.  My doctor told us he likes to do his c/s anytime between 38w3d and 39w3d.  We didn't get to choose the exact day, he just said "what are you doing on the 24th?".  So I said "having a baby?!".  That was that.  So if you have the luxury of picking the exact date, don't feel guilty about bumping it up a few days.
  • I am new at this whole thing, but I have known for the past five years that if I have a baby I will need a c-section.  (Medically neccessary) I am not allowed to go into active labor.  That being said the doctor advised me when I first saw him that I need to have a c-section planned atleast a week before my due date.  Like I said I have not had a c-section yet, but in my opinion I feel it would be fine if you had one at 39 weeks.  I chose the date based on when my doctor would be there and knowing active labor was not allowed for me.  We know our date can change to earlier, but it will not be later.  I say pick a date that works for both you and your dh and your doctor.
  • I had an emergency c-section with number 1 and, for many reasons, I will be having a c-section with number 2.  My ob's office said I can schedule any day after 39 weeks.  I am shooting for the 27th of January, which is two days before his due date.  I haven't scheduled it yet (lots of crossed wires) but I am hoping to do it at my next appointment.

One of the doctor's in the group told me to schedule it for whenever DH and I are most comfortable. My first was 6 days late, so thinking about that and how this pregnancy has been going, DH and I want to go as long as possible.  He also told me that if the baby comes early, they'll just do the c-section then.  He said they'd prefer I'd not be in active labor, but that if I get to the hospital soon enough, it would not be anything to worry about (this is if labor has already started).
