2nd Trimester

Showing and going to the gym...

To those of you who are showing and going to the gym:  When you go, do you feel like everyone's looking at you like you are a leper?  I went to the gym today for the first time since I have been showing and you would have thought that I was walking around with cut off "Daisy Duke's" on.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Showing and going to the gym...

  • I am taking a dance class this semester and I came back from Thanksgiving showing way more than before. I feel so out of place now, like people can't get over the fact that I am pregnant and taking a tap dance class.

  • Are you sure it's not all in your head?  There are many pregnant women at our gym including some of the instructors.  Nobody cares at all.

  • Pretty sure that's all in your head. Most people at my gym are too absorbed with themselves to pay attention to others.

It could be.  It just seems weird when I'm approaching  people and someone whispers and the entire group looks at you.  Or when someone stops their reps and stares directly at you.  Or when someone is talking to someone else, but is staring at you.  But you did say that there are many pregnant women at your gym so it may just be a part of the culture where you are.  I was the only one that was visibly pregnant -that I saw- and it was the prime time of day (between 4 and 6).

  • I wish I was showing more.  I go to the gym and look like a girl with a huge gut on the elliptical.  I think when you're pregnant people look at you like anyone else would look at you in public, they are just noticing your baby bump.
  • YES. People totally stare.

  • Start taking a used vodka bottle to use as your gym water bottle.  Then give them the "I-dare-you-to-stare" look.

But really, most people don't pay attention to other people unless they are doing something really strange (which I don't think just being pregnant at the gym would constitute).  And if they are staring at you, just smile.  That's what I do :-)

  • no, I just do my thing and go.  Sometimes in spin or kickboxing the instructors will make a joke and then people ask me questions later, but nothing really.  Although... the other day I walk in w/ a big sweatshirt on, didn't look pg at all, and the girl at the desk said "I didn't know you were pregnant" so apparently they are talking about me, but whatever, I'm proud I'm still active

    Me too!

  • It depends on what gym you go to.  I used to work at a gym in Richmond where there were a lot of starers...  It was the kind of gym where people put on their makeup to work out.  I didnt last too long there because the place gave me the heebies

  • I don't show yet, but I expect some glances and stares at least at first when the bump arrives. I go to the gym on base when it's mainly old people and Italians (I prefer to not go when it's full of military guys.. A little intimidating. Lol). Italians already stare a lot, so I think a bump will make it worse. But it's ok. I'll be proud of my bump when I get it.
  • omg i posted about this a few weeks ago! people are SO rude! when im in the coed section i get very few glances but when i go to the womens section i get elevator eyes and all. i seriously want to scream at someone. at first i felt like i looked fat, not pregnant. but now, im clearly pregnant looking. i had one woman stare me  up and down and go "WOAH! uh YEA!" to the woman next to her as i walked by- she was VERY obvious about it.

i give you, and anyone else whos working out while pregnant, a HUGE pat on the back!
