Banking question NBR

I looked at my checking account online today and noticed that a check that is over a year old just cleared. It was written to a former co-worker to cover my portion of a restaurant tab from September 2008. She never cashed it until now. I'm ticked because now I have to readjust my monthly budget which luckily has plenty of room in it this month. Is there not a period of time in which personal checks are no longer valid? I know that usually business checks will have a "do not cash after 90 days" clause on them.

Re: Banking question NBR

  • I always thought banks refused anything over 90 days..business or personal. She could have at least given you a heads up at this point. Maybe she lost the check and just found it?

  • There's no expiration date for personal checks.  A lot of banks don't even look at the date it was written.
  • Up here personal cheques are only valid for 1 year.
  • That is super obnoxious that she JUST cashed that.  It would have been polite for her to call you to let you know ...   that has happened to me before too and it's super frustrating. I think personal checks are valid pretty much forever.  It sucks.
  • At the bank I worked at (which is a huge national one), no.  As long as the account is still active the check can be cashed.  We would have the  tellers verify the account is still active on a really old check though, since lots of times the account would have been closed, or might not have enough to cover the check.

Oh, we don't talk. She was a teacher in my department and she got fired earlier this school year, while I was on leave. I was kind of surprised to see that is was cashed as I figured she lost it and wrote it off of my checking account balance months ago. I'm really surprised she still had it considering what a slob she is.
