Re: diaper area hemangioma ?

  • One of my dd's has one on her backside right about where the diaper hits...the pedi just keeps checking it at her appts and so far it looks fine...it is my understanding it will get bigger and then smaller and then flat and then fade a little...as long as it isn't near a major vein or artery there isn't too much to worry about (tho it is a bit unsightly)...hopefully it isn't something you need to worry too much about...good luck!

  • Exactly what the last poster wrote.  Both my girls have hemangiomas.  L has one on her labia that has stayed relatively small.  It does not bother her.  We have taken them to see the dermatologist and plastic surgeon as the one on L's back ulcerated.  But the one on her labia is fine and should go away on its own.  Just watch it that it does not bleed.

  • thanks ladies! I did some research and i am sooo worried about it ulcerating i CAN NOT imagine how awful that must be for them!! I was reading there are risks of a diaper area hemangioma ulcerating b/c of infection.  I wonder if its worth getting removed to avoid the pain and risk? I will let the pedi tell me what he thinks but to be extra safe i may take her to see a pedi dermatologist.

If i had to guess DD's hemangioma is about a little larger than the size of a pencil eraser.  I also think she has one the size of a pencil point on the back of her neck.  I also read that putting acuaphor (spelled that wrong i think?) on the hemangioma will help the skin stretch and keep it from ulcerating.  and use triple paste when it does ulcerate to keep the area dry?  have you heard of these suggesions?  obvioulsy i will discuss these w/ the pedi.

  • We got medicine when L's hemangioma ulcerated.  And it took a good month for it to clear.  And now I use aquaphor on it and keep it wrapped.  It is the friction that causes the ulcerating.  If it does bleed, you can apply pressure for a good 10 min and it should stop.  As long as it doesn't ulcerate, your LO is not in any kind of pain from it.  The doc will probably just keep an eye on it.  She'll be fine!

  • One of my DD's has a hemangioma on her butt cheek.  The docs told us what a PP wrote, basically it may get a little larger, but should eventually disappear by the time she's 5 or so.  We keep an eye on it, and haven't had any problems so far.
  • my DD was born with one on her left labia....we have had a lot of problems. She got a staph infection there when she was only 2 weeks old because it broke open and got really infected. She had to go 3 days in a row to get rocephin shots and was on keflex....she healed and all was well and now the inside of the hemangioma in her labia has broken open. We had to take her to the ER in friday night...went in to see the pedi yesterday....she is back on keflex. so stressful. can hardly wait for all of this to go away!
