adjusted age and milestones

the M&Ms were born at 36 weeks 5 days.  They were both around 6 pounds so they were good weights.  They are now almost 2 mo old and i know they are suposed to be smiling by 2 months, but no sign of that just yet?!?!?

am i asking too much considering they were born early?  Its hard to not compare them to other 2 mo olds.  They are both growing well and are awake more and more every day so im certainly not worried about them... i just wish i knew when to expect things?  Should i use thier adjusted age for milestones?  or since they were such good sizes at borth assume thier birth age?

Re: adjusted age and milestones

  • Griffin was born at 36w and the doc said they do not adjust for age for 36 weekers... if he was 35 or less they would have.

Griffin did a lot of things on the later end of normal - and i did always keep in mind that he was 4w early - so just keep that in mind- try not to stress out... but do talk to your pedi if you are worried.   most babies smile around 2mos- some later - as with all things baby- they all do it in their own time - so try not to compare to other people's kids - which is REALLY hard when you have twins b/c you compare them to each other all day long :)

  • My girls were born at 36w5d, too.  Charlotte ended up in PT with gross motor delays from torticollis.  Her physical therapist said that any baby born before 38 can technically be given an adjusted age for milestones, although most medical professionals don't.  Basically, what that means is that you should generally look to your babies doing things at the normal times, but if they are a couple weeks late, there's no need for concern.

Both my girls were on the late side for smiling, although neither one of them had any other social delays after that.  Evelyn ended up hitting all her milestones at average, and occasionally earlier than average, times.  Charlotte hit most of her milestons at average times, although gross motor skills were delayed significantly for her first year.  Since their first year, they've pretty much been on target or ahead of the curve with their milestones.

    Best of luck.

  • My girls were born at 36 weeks and our pedi. adjusted their age for the first year. They said they are considered to be pre-term up until 38 weeks, so we had to adjust their age for them being born early. Yes they are not preemies, but they still are not term babies. My girls also did not hit the milestones early on like term babies. They each smiled about 2 weeks later than other babies. They did the same with STTN, cooing, rolling over, sitting unsupported, eating solids and crawling. But by about the 11th month they were caught up to all their milestones.

They were not always behind and it was not always 4 weeks behind, most of the time they were in between their real age and adjusted age. I just had to keep in my mind that they could be a couple of weeks behind on some things because they were born early and not to panic if they were not doing the same things as other babies their real age were doing.

My pedi said it doesn't matter if they are born weighing a good amount and healthy, it is more about development maturity and since the babies were supposed to be inside me for an additional 2-4 weeks they need a couple of weeks extra to be on track with milestones.
