To co-sleep or not...that is the question.....

In the hospital, they put our twins in separate bassinets for about a week.  The nurses said it was now hospital policy due to reports of SIDS in babies who co-sleep.  We were going to co-sleep the babies at home, but are now second guessing ourselves.  Even our pedi was against it. Any thoughts?  I guess as long as they are swaddles it doesn't really matter, but how long until they are out of the swaddle?

Re: To co-sleep or not...that is the question.....

  • We let ours co-sleep and will until they are de-swaddled or rolling (4 months old, I think).  The docs probably tell you not to because it is technically safer and they need to cover their a$$es,  GL!

  • Do you mean having the twins sleep together in the same bassinet/crib or have the twins sleep with you?

Our DDs shared a crib from when they came home (well, when they started sleeping somewhere other than their bouncy seats) until they were about 7 months.  Particularly in the crib, I felt that they were safe because they were far apart and really didn't go anywhere.  When they started moving, the SIDS risk had already decreased.

  • our nicu told us not too as welll,  but we did anyway. we didn't put them right next to each other like they were in the nicu, though. there was plenty of room between them, and they didn't roll or move much so i was comfortable with it.

  • our boys are in the same crib. we use sleep positioners to keep them away from each other- from what i understand the SIDS risk is due to breathing each other's exhale (carbon dioxide). at this point our boys are feet to feet so im not really worried about that. they are going to need their own cribs soon because they are getting too tall to share.
  • we never had them sleep together at night- mostly b/c of the SIDS risk.  Even if they are swaddled- if their faces turn towards each other they can end up breathing in the other's CO2 too much which is a risk.

Our guys STTN from 8w on - so NOT cosleeping does not hurt them sleep wise, that is for sure- our guys are great sleepers.

I put them down for some naps together so they do get that closeness... and they play together, etc... but i see no reason to have them sleep together at night.

  • DDs started waking each other up by about 8 weeks.  No matter how far apart we put them, they always wiggled right next to each other in about 30 minutes.

  • Ours slept in the same co-sleeper for the first six weeks, right next to me. They loved it and slept better. They could not move enough to touch each other. At 8 weeks we moved them into their own room in the same crib. By ten weeks they could scoot around enough to touch each other and we separated them.
