Ugh. At a party today I heard that golden nugget of observation, plus another woman asked me "What is he, 4 months?"
Yes, she was a 35 weeker but she's over 17 pounds, and generally in about the 50% for height for her chronological age---so, she's petite, yes, but not abnormally tiny. And she was crawling and talking (well, dada and hi and babbling galore beyond that) and feeding herself latkes- what more did these people want?
I know comments like those are to be ignored, but I just never know what to say back and end up awkwardly smiling and nodding...."Yes, she's small. Thanks for noticing. She was premature and perhaps you've also noticed that I am fairly small and H measures 5'9'' on a tall day." LOL
Re: "She's so small for 9 months!"
Eh... chalk it up to ignorance. People look at my 20+ pounder and call him small for his age... really? That's nuts.
People have no clue what they are talking about! 50% is PERFECT!
Wow and here I thought only I encountered the ignorant people. My 33 weeker is very long but petite as well at 15lbs, 7.5 months. She is quite healthy though, thank goodness but I still get... "Ohhh, she is SO tiny.'
Unless, of course, they're telling me how cute HE is... ugh!
Eh, people are dumb. They have no side-by-side basis for comparison.
I've had someone tell me that my 15 lb 15 month old was HUGE. Clearly, she was not huge for her age, since she was, like, negative 3% for weight. Turns out this woman's sister just had a baby a few days earlier. EVERYTHING looks huge when the last child you saw was a 3 day old baby!
