DS is not eating or nursing and has a cold??

DS has had a cough with a little runny nose since Thursday.  Earlier today he was running a fever of 101 so we gave him some tylenol and it went back down.  He has been eating about 1/2 his normal amount of solids today but was nursing fine.  Then for dinner we could only get him to eat applesauce (the only thing cold) and just now when I went to put him down for bed he refused to nurse.  He wouldn't even latch on.  He was turning his head away.  He's never refused to nurse before.  I mean he's gotten upset while nursing during growth spurts but never this.

I'm not sure what to do?  Should I take him to the pedi first thing tomorrow or wait and see how he does with breakfast?  He should wake up to nurse at least once tonight before the pedi opens.  Also I cleared out his nose and his humidifier is going.  He won't sleep in the swing so he is laying on his side in the crib.  This is our first cold and I'm a little lost on how to help him.

  • If he's still not nursing or eating tomorrow I'd definitely call/take him in.  It could have just been a random thing, which wouldn't be such a big deal.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much just for the one meal and nursing session but if it continues it's worth at least a call to the doc.  I know when I get sick even with just a cold I don't really feel like eating much.
  • If he doesn't eat solids that's fine, but if he's not taking liquids that is a problem. Give it a little while and if he still won't nurse maybe try some pedialyte or half gatorade half water however he'll take it (cup, bottle, syringe). If he starts to look really sick to you (not just got a cold sick) go to the ER.

  • Also, tylenol/ibuprofen may help him feel better and in turn he'll drink more. So try to keep him well medicated and see if it helps. Of course, if it doesn't make a difference, stop giving it to him.
