Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did LO start sleeping on their tummy?

DD still sleeps on her back.  If your LO sleeps on their tummy, when did you start this?  How did you know your LO was ready?  DD isn't really rolling over yet.  That is, she did it several times a day every day for a week like a month ago and not since.  Do babies sleep better on their tummies?

Re: When did LO start sleeping on their tummy?

  • DS started sleeping on his stomach when he learned to roll back to front (just shy of six months).  He previously HATED being on his stomach, but once he learned how to roll, he eventually got used to be on his stomach.  He now either likes to sleep on his side or on his stomach.

I would not put your DD on her stomach until she is able to get there herself; once she starts rolling more, you won't be able to prevent it anyway.  :)  But, until then, better safe than sorry to ensure she has the muscle tone she needs to turn her head enough not to face-plant directly into the mattress and not know how to move her head to one side.

  • DD always slept on her back but eventually started rolling onto her belly and would wake up screaming. It was an all-day affair to flip her back, then she'd do it again, etc. Finally, I just let her CIO for a while for one of her naps and she ended up falling asleep on her belly. After 1.5-2 days, she figured out how to fall asleep on her belly. This was around 5-6 months. Now, she sleeps however she ends up b/c she rolls around everywhere in her sleep.
  • DD has always loved tummy time, and at around 6 months, she discovered she could roll over and sleep on her tummy. I was freaked out at first and frequently checked on her but everyone assured me that once they can roll over and get themselves on their tummy, the risk of SIDS goes way done.

Once she started sleeping on her tummy, she slept SOOOO much better. it's like that's what she wanted all along.

  • I always put her down on her back but sometimes come to find her sleeping on her tummy (this has been for the last couple of weeks).
  • We always lay LO down on his back. He usually sleeps on his side but sometimes rolls onto  his belly. I'm ok with his sleeping on his stomach at this point but SO freaks out and turns LO over.
  • My son started rolling back to belly a few weeks ago...and ever since, he sleeps on his belly.  I always put him down on his back, but I think he rolls over almost immediately.

  • He's been sleeping on his tummy since 6 weeks. He wouldn't sleep on his back, and loved tummy time so I put him to sleep on his stomach one night and he STTN for the first time...and pretty much the only time.

  • he's always preferred his tummy to sleep on, but he started sleeping on his tummy when he could roll over on his own and I couldn't keep him from doing it - about 5 months. DS def sleeps better on his tummy.

  • Since a few weeks old. I always thought I'd never let her sleep on her tummy but she wouldn't sleep on her back and had very good neck control at a really young age. She is always on her tummy now.
  • 2 1/2- 3 months.  Once DS could pick up and move his head well, we started putting him down that way.  He slept on his back for maybe 10 days when he was first born, but then he always slept on our chests or on his side on my arm, so he practically never slept on his back.

  • Probably right around 6 months when she started rolling back to front and front to back. I've always put her down on her back, but she always ends up rolling over onto her stomach or side. Sometimes when I check on her she is sleeping with her face in the mattress. I'm not sure how this is comfortable... but whatever works.
  • She learned how to roll back to belly at about 4 months and then started doing it when I put her in her crib. I figured I couldn't stop her, so she has been sleeping on her belly ever since. I still place her in her crib on her back though.
  • At 2 months when she started rolling. Her pedi said to leave her on her tummy since she already knew how to roll. There was no need to put her back on her back if she'd eventually roll back on to her belly. I think she sleeps a lot better on her belly. She prefers it actually. I dont' worry. Plus she doesn't really sleep with blankets.
