Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Chicken pox?

DH and I just noticed that DS has a few blister-like marks around his neck. They look like chicken pox to me, but he doesn't have a fever and seems to be in a pretty good mood. Does anyone know if there is something else similar to chicken pox that causes a rash like this? Also, I thought that chicken pox would show up all over and not just in one spot...maybe it just starts like this and gets worse?

Ugh, I really hope it's just some random thing and it goes away. Chicken pox is the last thing I need in this house with a newborn. I thought he had been vaccinated against this but now I think I'm remembering that maybe they held off on that at his 12 month appt because I was pregnant.

Re: Chicken pox?

  • When I was younger (about 6) my sister who was 2 at the time got chicken pox only on her face, with maybe 2 on her back...she spread them to myself and my older sister. So, IMO I would be really careful, especially with the newborn. I know a lot of toddlers/younger kids who have a few pox, then clear up, but end up getting a worse case a few years down the road. If you're concerned I would call the pedi tomorrow. Good luck!

Thank you, I'm definitely going to call tomorrow. It's going to be hard keeping them apart but I'm going to do my best. Too bad DH is going back to work tomorrow :(

  • DD got the chicken pox back in July. This is what her spots looked like:

I took her to the doctor because she didn't get a fever either. Pedi said it did look like the chicken pox but that is the kind of reaction most kids are getting anymore because of the vaccine. She got that vaccine last December so I knew it was just a reaction to the shot. Her "spots" just pimpled up and then went straight to a scab. No blisters. And DS never got them. The spots never seemed to bother her either. Hope your DS feels better soon!
