What do I need to change a diaper?

Okay, so I'm starting to think about how to organize the dresser (which will also function as our changing station).  What the heck do you need right there (within arms reach) when changing a little girl?  I made a list...but haven't changed a diaper in probably 10 years, so thought I'd better check!   TIA!

Re: What do I need to change a diaper?

  • Diaper, wipes, trash can
  • Loading the player...
  • butt cream
  • Whew!  So far, all this was on my list so I don't feel so dumb now! :)  Anyone else told not to use baby powder?  We were at birth prep class.

Why no baby powder? I bought a big Johnson's basket of everything and it has powder in it. Is it bad?

  • Baby powder gets in their lungs making it harder for them to breathe. I was told not to use it but got some as a shower gift.
  • diapers-yes sometimes multiple!-you will get pooped on or peed on at some point, wipes, lotion, butt paste, sometimes a toy or something to occupy baby is good, diaper pail very close by is good too.   sometimes camera!! :)   extra outfit is good to have within reach often as well.

We were told not to use baby powder, too.  It is really easy for the baby to breathe in (even if you are careful with it) and really bad for their lungs.

  • i use baby powder-the trick--put it in the diaper and if you are careful not much gets around baby's face.  and seriously we all breathed in powder and i think we are okay-right??  i used it for my daughter-it really helps keep diaper rash at bay!  so if you want to use it-use it
  • Baby powder is also bad because of the perfumes and dyes in it. You don't want those things next to your baby's skin.

It can actually make a rash worse.

I guess they can breathe it in and it isn't good.

    this!!! Yes

  • eh, just because our parents did something doesn't mean it was the best thing. Did it kill us? Obviously not. But as science and medicine continue to improve, we discover new things. When our kids have kids, they will have discovered better ways to do things, too.
  • if you are worried about perfumes and dyes in baby powder than watch which diapers you use-pampers have perfume and dye in them-as do other brands which make them more absorbant etc.   also people don't like Johnson products because of perfumes and dyes etc.   so if that is the biggest concern about powder just watch all other products too!

This.  I never applied butt cream and DD never got a rash.  Just change your LO often.

LMAO!  I dread the incidents that warrant a camera...but I know they'll happen!

  • We have a rectangular canvas storage container from BRU. It is is 1 box of wipes, 1 box of plastic diaper bags (for poop diapers), 1 book (because now DD wants to roll, you won't need this til later on), baby powder, A+D w/ zinc & nursery jelly (pending on what is needed if there's a rash or not). In addition when DD was small I kept a burp cloth in the container also just incase she spit up while I was changing, or for the one time I got peed on, it was in arms reach. I also kept the booger sucker in there and her nail clippers (if she was laying nice & still on the changing pad I could get the nails clipped after a changing if they needed it. The diaper pale is arms reach away. I also recommend a lap pad on top of your diaper pad cover, just incase of a leak, you won't have to worry about taking off & washing the entire cover. Gerber makes some cute ones, I think my pack of 4 was $8 at BRU.

  • Diaper, wipes, trash can, cream of some kind if you use it. Oh and a changing pad with cover, I also use the waterproof lap pads under baby's bum to keep the changing pad dry for longer.

ETA: the powder that is bad for baby's lungs is the talc based powder. If you use corn starch or corn starch based powder there should be no problem

  • All I have on the changing table is diapers and wipes.  The Diaper Champ is also close by.

I won't be using any ointment unless a rash develops and also won't be using any powder unless there's a situation that would make him more comfortable by having a little powder.  And I have cornstarch powder if I do need it.

I like the idea of putting a waterproof pad on top of the changing pad though.  It would be much easier to toss in the laundry than having to take the cover off.  I might try to get another pack of those.  I have one in the pack n'play for just that reason!

haha.. so true! powder should be the least worry with all of the chemicals and crap in sposies.

This..they also slept in lead painted cribs and rubbed booze on babies teeth- So things and rules do change for a reason
