Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

WDYD when your child coughs all night?

Henry hasnt had a runny nose or a cough during the day (a little tonight when he was playing, but he also has asthma). But last night he was awake from 10-1115 coughing and tonight has been coughing for a good hour or more. His humidifier is on. He has water. What else can I do??

  • We give her a spoonful of honey for a cough.  It works really well.

  • Vicks on the bottom of his feet.

  • We run the humidifier on high and give him a packet of Honey Don't Cough before bedtime, and offer a sippy of water if he coughs himself awake.

  • We have DD half teaspoon of children's Dimetapp and it worked really well.

  • I've never tried this myself (haven't needed to yet for DD), but I've heard people swear by this, for both kids and adults.  Rub some baby Vick's VapoRub on his feet and then put his socks on.  Word is, it stops the cough for the night almost entirely.

  • DD's pedi said that the cough is more common at night because during the day talking and being upright help clear out the throat. At night all the yuckiness builds up and causes coughing. He said propping her up with a pillow could help. And of course the standard humidifier.
  • Ditto humidifier, VICKS... We have a Vicks humidifier that you can add the medication right to.

As for honey... um.. My pedi has said no til 2.  DD has had PB and all that fun stuff, but since honey is a botulism concern, I'm sticking to that guideline pretty closely.

Everything I've heard and read said honey is ok after 1 yr.

  • Hmm now I'm googling and that's what I'm seeing to. Either my pedi is super cautious or I'm remembering wrong. Or some fabulous combination of thw two.

  • we've done honey with lemon juice (skipping the whiskey ingredient that worked so well for our parents and grandparents).

The pedi also recommended benadryl at night - says it will dry up the nose, meaning less fluid draining into the throat, meaning less coughing. Works well.  We now do the same with children's claritin (on the pedi's recommendation).

If it persists, definitely take him in. That was the only symptom DS had for his latest ear infection.

When DS was sick at the end of Oct., the dr. told me I could give it to him for his cough.

Yeah, the botulism concern goes way down after 1 yr.  Actually, a lot of studies are now saying 6 months, but 1 yr. is the common recommendation.  That's when DD's pedi OK'd it.  She eats honey almost daily.

  • Two nights ago DD was up for 5 hours on and off coughing. It's harder on us than her I think. We pumped her humidifier, gave her lots of water, gave her honey, and put Vick's on her chest. And, increased the volume on our sound machine in our room. :)  Hope your little one (and everyone's) gets healthy soon! The cough sucks!

DD started a cough yesterday and last night she woke up a couple of times coughing pretty badly. I have one of those small vaporizers that runs with vapor strips, but it didn't seem to help any.

Tonight we're trying the Vicks baby-rub on her feet. I really hope it helps!
