i ran over a squirrel today.

and cried the whole way home.

then at home i cried and told dh it probably had a family and babies, but he said he heard it was a pimp squirrel who would impregnate female squirrels and leave them. the squirrel was a deadbeat.

he made me feel better. my story was sad LOL

Oof, that would get me too. I've never hit an animal (knock on wood) but I know that if/when I do I will be an absolute wreck.

When DH and I were dating he hit a squirrel while driving. I was in the car. I made him stop and move the squirrel out of the road so it wouldn't end up a flattened bloody mess. I'm lucky he still married me after that. lol

I have read (not sure where) that squirrels get hit by cars so often because they are engineered to expect danger to come from above (ie birds). So they tend to freeze to avoid detection when they sense danger. Which is not the best for automobile avoidance.

lol-I hit a squirrel 15 yrs ago at Preston and Royal Lane and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I looked in my rear view mirror and it was convulsing all of the place. : (

He just ran across the street and I thought he was gone. He stopped at the curb and ran back the other way right under my car.

To this day I stop and when a squirrel crosses my path until it hops into a tree or is clearly out of the way!

I was driving home one day and the lady in front of me hit a chipmunk. She just ran over it's back legs, so it was still running/limping around the road. I stopped until it got completely off the road and then called DH crying. He thought I was insane. And then he told me I should have hit it, because it was probably going to die anyway, so it would be less painful that way. I was so mad at him for it and cried the whole way home.

Awww. I stopped for a big groundhog once and got rear-ended. There was no damage done, to my car or the other person, we were going all of 20 mph. Most importantly the groundhog got away safely but DH was sooooo mad at me for braking for wildlife. I just couldn't hit it....he was so big and fluffy and staring right at me. In my defense the guy who hit me was on his cell phone and not paying attention. Now if I was on a highway I wouldn't have hit the brakes and like you would have been crying....probably for the rest of the day.

That sucks.

DH and I joke that the squirrels in our neighborhood are suicidal. They are notorious for looking at you coming towards them and them darting out in front of your car at the last second. I'm amazed that in the 6.5 years that I've lived here, I've only hit one.
