NBR: Christmas baking question

How early is too early to bake Christmas cookies?  I plan to serve them and give them away Christmas Eve.  I do so much baking and cookie making this time of the year that it would be nice to start earlier than usual and free up the week of Christmas.  How long should I wait to start.

I see lots of baking posts on FB right now, but it seems a bit too early if I want them for Christmas Eve.

Re: NBR: Christmas baking question

  • I usually bake the week of Christmas and seal everything in tight tupperware or tins, and have had good luck with it lasting 4-5 days and still tasting fresh.  I am probably doing all my baking the weekend before Christmas.

  • My mom bakes and freezes her chocolate chip cookies in tins- she's the only person I know who does this. However, they thaw just fine and taste great, and she can do a ton ahead of time. Not sure if this would work for other kinds of cookies, though!

I'd suggest this or even just preparing the dough and freezing it.  If you're doing drop cookies you could even freeze them in the "drops"--pretty much like the frozen cookie dough you can buy at the store.  You'd need lots of room in your freezer for the cookie sheets while they're freezing, though.

  • As long as you seal the cookies properly, they will last awhile. THat's why I hold the cookie swap about 10 days before Christmas. All cookies should last if you keep in an airtight container. Just plastic wrap over the cookies won't cut it. I typically put mine in ziploc containers after I get home from the swap.

  • My mom and I freeze all our cookies after they are baked, they keep just fine that way! And there's nothing as good as a frozen Buckeye. Yum.
