Identical twins- Question

Hi!

I went in for a sono on Tues and found out that Im expecting TWINS! My sono tech as well as doc were pretty sure and confident they are identical.

Its because there was two seperate sacs in the same placenta?

Does that sound right?

and most likely the same sex as well?

TIA!

Re: Identical twins- Question

  • Ours are identical and we knew it from 8 weeks on because there was one placenta and only a very thin membrane between them.  They're in the same chorionic (placenta) sac, but have separate amniotic sacs.  And they're both girls!

Congrats!!  You'll find tons of info on this board : )

This is/was the case with me, too. We also did IVF and put a specific number of embryos in, so we knew that one split.

  • yes, but of course you don't know the sex yet of your twins. but they will be the same sex. without a doubt. :)

  • Our twins are identical as well.  And yes, they have one placenta and two sacs.  The sac thing (if they share or have seperate) depends on when the egg split.  It is my understanding that two sacs means that the egg split within the first three days.  I may be wrong, but I think when the egg splits later they will share a sac, but you can look it up on-line or ask your Doc.  It is also my understanding that it is better when they have their own sac, risk wise, but the fact that they share a placenta is riskier than if they each had their own sac, just cuz they are sharing the source of all their nutrients.  But don't freak out, it doesn't mean that anything will go wrong, but just that you need more monitoring.  Yes, they will be the same sex.  There are some cases of different sex identicals, but it is really rare....like REALLY rare.  My peri told us from the beginning that they will be the same sex.  Congrats and welcome!  It is very exciting!!!  This board is GREAT for asking your questions and getting support!!!  GL!!!
  • We just found out on Monday that we were having twins. They are in one sac with a thin membrane between them and they share a placenta. Our high-risk doctor told us that they would be identical. Congrats!?
  • My girls are identical.  We found out at 6w3d when we saw two heartbeats in the same gestational sac.  They share a placenta, and yes, yours will be the same sex.  We saw the thin membrane between ours at 8 weeks, meaning they are mono/di identical twins.  They share the same gestational sac, but have their own amniotic sac (bag of waters).

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • My girls shared a placenta and had very very thin membranes separating their fluids - we were told in utero that they were identical - and they are!
