Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Crying out while sleeping

A few weeks ago, my DS had a little cold that took him from sleeping solid through the night to sleeping sporadically and crying during the night.

Post-cold, he went a couple of nights sleeping solid again, but after that since then, he wakes up throughout the night (even naps sometimes) screaming crying.  Sometimes it's once or twice but sometimes it's up to 5 times.  When I go in, I put his paci in and pat his belly and he's fine.  He never even opens his eyes.

I'm wondering if this is common for this age?  Is he just being a little needy?  My DH talk about him having nightmares (like the dog eating him, falling, etc.), but not sure if that's even possible.

I just feel so badly for the poor little fella and not sure if I should be concerned or not...

Re: Crying out while sleeping

  • I would take him to the pedi to rule out an ear infection.  Ear infection pain is most often worst at night, when laying flat, and the pain can all but seem to disappear entirely by morning.  He might also be teething.  Either way, I'd take him to the pedi to rule out a treatable medical cause, especially because this started not long after he had a cold.

  • How long do you let him cry for?  DS will cry out every couple of hours but it's only for a few seconds.  If I were to go in and do anything, it would disrupt his sleep and cause way more crying (though this doesn't seem to be your problem).

  • He has both episodes.  Sometime's it's just the "beginning" of the cry and he only cries out a couple of times and then he's done and I don't go in his room.  However, primarily, it becomes a full on loud cry that makes me jump out of my pants :).  That's when I sneak in & put his paci in, rub his belly and he's fine...

  • maybe nightmares?  My LO does this sometimes and just going in and rocking him for a few minutes always puts him back to sleep.

Although I always wonder what a 9 month old could have nightmares about!
