My RE is turning me back over to my OB after next week, and I'm unsure of what I need to ask her given I'm over 35 and PG with twins. I've been with her (as my GYN) for a decade now and adore her, so I'm hoping to stick with her even though it's a haul to get to her office.
Given my situation, what sort of questions do I need to ask her about her practice, her beliefs on multiple pregnancies/deliveries, etc? She also delivers out of two hospitals. What do I need to be asking about each hospital to make the best choice?
TIA for any advice you can offer. I have some books on order, but I want to start compiling my list of questions.
Re: Questions for OB?
Congratulations on your pregnancy AND for graduating from the RE!
I would ask the following questions:
1. Your OB's experience delivering twins and overseeing a twin pregnancy. If she has little experience, how does she feel about co-managing your pregnancy together with an MFM (maternal fetal medicine MD/perinatologist). Your OB should be comfortable with the MFM and should have recommendations for you. Mine gave me MFM names right away, even though she has delivered many twins.
2. Your OB's views on vaginal delivery for twins. Some feel comfortable with and are trained in vaginal delivery if baby A is head down, even if baby B is breach (that is what I was looking for). Some will not deliver vaginally if any of the babies are breech.
3. Choose the hospital with the best NICU. Hands down. At least a level III NICU. It doesn't mean that your babies will need it, but you must be prepared, since many twins arrive early.
4. How often will your OB want to see you? You want the answer to be a progression -- most twin pregnancies require a lot more oversight, to make sure both babies are doing well, etc. I would want my OB to see me about every 4 weeks at first, and then increasing in frequency to every 2 weeks and possibly even every week closer to the end.
5. Discuss your options/views on early genetic testing. How does she view CVS and/or amnio? Are you interested in these proceedures?
That is all I can think of. GL!!!
