3rd Trimester

Deli Meat

Of course I stayed away from this completely 1st and 2nd tri.  But just asked my OB about it and he said you can eat it in moderation (and he is pretty strict.)  The chances of a non-pregnant person getting listeria is low so the same goes for pregnant woman.  Is that what your OB told you?  Have you guys been eating it?  That is my biggest CRAVING!

Re: Deli Meat

  • LOL, oh my, for a second I thought I clicked on the 1st tri board

  • I've been eating deli meat this entire pregnancy.  If I didn't bring sandwiches to work for lunch I'd eat out and if I ate out every day I would've gained 100 pounds by now.  Nothing beats a good turkey sandwich.

  • I had a sandwich the other nite.

I kinda nuked the ham for a little bit but then enjoyed the sandwich oh so much right after. I am still here and my baby is still kicking the ever living crap out of me.

  • Ummm... my nurses give me cold cut sandwiches for snacks. I'm pretty sure it's okay. Confused
  • Just had a ham melt for lunch :)
  • I have been eating cold cuts just about everyday of this entire pregnancy. My doctor never told me not to, so I've never avoided it. I love my cold turkey sandwiches with mayo!
  • I eat it all the time... YUMMY... I love TURKEY!

  • I have been eating turkey hoagies since day one and my little girl is just fine. I went through a phase where I was eating them at least once a week if not more. EAT IT!!!!!!

  • I haven't eaten deli meat since finding out I was pg.  I avoided it with my first pg too.  However, I am not one to say it is necessary, just a choice I made.  If you are craving it, then go ahead.  You could always make it warm, like a hot ham and cheese, or turkey melt.

  • Eat it all the time....I am eating it right now even.  I didn't really eat much in 1st or 2nd tri but now I have been a lot more.
  • Somebody is trying to to start something...52 posts and they're posting about lunch meat on 3rd tri? I call MUD

  • I never stopped eating it...
  • I've eaten lunch meat and never had a problem.  However, I never understood the whole "in moderation" argument.  You could eat lunch meat 3 times a day for months and not get sick or you could be really unlucky and eat one contaminated piece of meat and get sick.

My point was you can do or have just about anything... EAT what you want!  If you eat "in moderation" meaning you don't eat it ALL the time, you're less likely to get sick.  You're also less likely to slip on ice if you rarely walk on it.

  • I have eaten it the entire pregnancy. I was eating a sammy at my shower laast weekend and another pregnant gal gasped and says "OMG, you eat lunchmeat?!?!" I thought she was joking. She wasn't.

Ditto!  It really only takes once to get sick.  BUT  I have had deli meat a few times since being pg, but have mostly avoided it.  My doc recommends avoiding it as well.

  • I ate deli meat this entire pregnancy, a lot of it.  My theory is: you're far more likely to catch nasty germs from doorknobs or that sniffley kid on the bus but we don't all avoid buses and doors, now do we?   I doubt I'd eat a deli sandwich from a dirty truck stop or Stop & Go though.
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

    Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • I regularly eat deli sandwiches from the local roach coach.  They're so cheap because they bring up the meat from Tijuana and I just can't resist.  They do smell a little funky but I got used to it after the 2nd month.

    Confused

  • I like toasted sandwiches  anyway so this was never really an issue with me.
  • I eat it all the time. My OB said in the over 20 years she's been practicing, she hasn't seen a case of listeriosis, so she's not too worried. The only time I avoided it was when I was at a Subway in the ghetto. If you're not sure of the safety of the food, then get something cooked. Other than that, enjoy yourself :).
