Breastfeeding

I think we might be done soon.

I posted a couple of weeks ago about making it to nine months - looking forward to these last three months.  I think we may be quitting sooner than that.

DS had his 9 month check  up.  He is back sliding on the growth curve.  He was 95% for height at six months.  Now he's 50%.  He was 50% for weight, now he's 10%.  The pedi thinks his food allergies have a lot to do with this so we are seeing a nutritionist next week.  But he's also been refusing the breast recently.

I am still nursing in the morning and before he goes to sleep but I don't think he's been getting much.  He will suck for a few seconds then pull off and shake his head no.  Sooo cute but I'm not sure if he's shaking his head b/c he doesn't want it or because there isn't enough there.  So I end up supplementing afterwards and he'll take 6 or 7 oz from the bottle so he can't be getting much from me.  Sad

I am going to continue offering to nurse and see what happens but I fear this is the beginning of the end.

Re: I think we might be done soon.

  • Big hugs.

My DS slid back at his 9 month appointment for weight too...we think it's because he started crawling (and now he's walking) so early....and I'm sure in your case the allergies aren't helping either.

    Hang in there!

  • That's a good point I hadn't considered...Ryan has been crawling for a while now and is walking behind push toys but not on his own yet.  Between that and fighting off allergies he is burning a lot of calories.  I will mention that to the nutritionist.  Thanks.

  • Did they check his iron at all? Ds was a bit low, and turns out I was anemic too. Now we are both on iron...apparently that can cause a slow down in weight gain.

  • Sorry to hear that. On the weight thing...keep in mind once they start moving, it's hard to keep on weight. DS started crawling at 7 months, cruising at 8 and walking at 10. He eats food like there's no tomorrow; been doing this since he started getting table food at 9 months. He's now nearly 16 months and only 20 lbs. - - just doesn't put on the weight. DD was the same.  She's 4 and only 33 lbs.
  • My DS went from the 50th% at 6 months to the 10th % at 12 months.  He only gained 2 lbs from 6-12 months.  He was very active and the pedi wasn't concerned at all.  He was walking by 10 months and moving all over the place.  I would continue to offer the breast and see what happens.
