Nbr: Does anyone know how much it costs to rewire a house?

Dh and I are looking to buy and old house and it has all very very old wiring that is really unsafe. It's about 3500 sq ft (it's actually 2 houses) and I'm worried we won't be able to buy it because the costs of rewiring. Does anyone know an average cost of rewiring? TIA

Is it old knob and tube wiring?

I don't know the cost in the states but in Canada you're looking at around $10 000

an electrician should give you a free price quote. you can work that into the offer if there is room for negotiation.

My boyfriend's an electrician so it only cost me material. The thing that sucks with old homes is you'll probably want to gut it completely other wise you'll have wire covers on the floor/wall. We gutted our house, re-wired, insolated and drywalled. We're just about done with it and so far it's cost me about $10,000, including the kitchen and bathroom redone/updated. I've luckily only had to pay for material and haven't had to call anyone as of yet. He's very handy.
