Crib bedding is such a rip off!

Argh!  The baby bedding I want comes in crib set and toddler set versions.  The crib set has a fitted sheet, bumpers, bed skirt and quilt.  It's $160.  The toddler bed version comes with the same quilt, flat sheet, fitted sheet and pillow case and is $70.  I wasn't planning on using bumpers so I'd rather just buy the toddler version and buy a solid color bed skirt if the crib looks naked without it.  I was totally stoked to see that a single fitted sheet I'd been looking at on Pottery Barn Kids was on clearance for $20!  Funny how I'm willing to spend $20 on a fitted sheet for a crib but won't spend more than $60 at the Macy's clearance rack for a sheet set for my king size bed.

Seriously, is crib bedding so expensive because we're willing to pay high prices or because it's worth the price?  I think it's because we're willing to pay the higher price and the makers of this stuff know it.

  • I vote on willing to pay.  We all want to do well for our children and will pay.  I gave up on bedding.  I have decided to teach myself to sew and make my own.  I am almost done with the crib skirt.  and I sewing in a straight line.  :)

  • I had the same realization as I was buying bedding for DD's "big girl" room. I was at beyond-bedding.com and found the pony set for her room and found it in crib bedding too. There was like a $70 price difference if I am remembering correctly. Honestly, get the toddler bedding. The sheets are the same size! The crib mattress goes on the toddler bed. I couldn't use the blanket for DD anyways, it just sat on the back of my glider. $199 for our bedding for DD and I used the dust ruffle and sheets. Not worth it IMO. This time around though I found boy bedding for $39.99 for the entire set at babymallonline.com so that deal I can't pass up.

  • This is why we're just doing white sheets to start with. All of that decorating money will be better spent on lots of other things we need.

  • Yup- I totally agree that it's just because people are willing to pay.

I had my mom make the bedding- I picked 3 different blue/red nautical fabrics for sheets and a red for the dust ruffle.  Total cost: $56.  I won't use the bumpers or quilt in the crib and all of the sets I liked had plain sheets and dust ruffles so I couldn't see spending the money.

  • It's like how women's clothes (like, tshirts) cost more than guys' even though there's less fabric.  We care more, and we're willing to spend more.

  • we're doing white sheets (for the most part... my mom bought us a fancy PBK sheet), no bumpers, but have a really pretty crib skirt (that was, admittedly, overpriced).

  • The bedding set we wanted was $180 at BRU.   Got it on amazon.com for $130.   Still steep for a baby, but it was more reasonable.

  • I 100% agree that this stuff is a rip off.  My bedding set (quilt, bumper, bed skirt, fitted sheet) was $215 and the stuff feels so scratchy.  If it weren't so darn cute, I'd be upset!  I'm just going to find softer sheets instead of using the ones that came with the set.
