sleeping on your side question

DH keeps pestering me about sleeping on my left side, because I always sleep on my right.

Is there a medical reason to sleep on your left? I can't remember anything these days....

Re: sleeping on your side question

  • Sleeping on your right side puts pressure on your vena cava (sp?) - similar to sleeping on your back. I try to sleep on my left as much as I can but sometimes my hip starts hurting and I have to turn over.

  • yep, all about blood pressure and best blood flow to baby.

  • My Dr told me it doesn't matter what side you sleep on...she said too many people worry about little things like this. I switch sides constantly while I'm sleeping so I can find a comfortable position.
  • I say the most important thing though is getting sleep. Try to sleep on your left but roll over if it becomes too painful, god knows your hips won't lie. Big Smile

  • I just sleep wherever I can get comfortable these days.  Luckily I do ok on my left side most of the night but I'm not gonna stay there if my hip starts hurting.

  • I try to start on my left because I know the blood flow is better...but I always end up on my right because the sciatic pain I get is also on my left. I've been told sleeping on your sides either way is better than on your back.

I can barely be on my back more than 30 seconds during a simple transition to roll over though.

  • sleeping on your left side is supposed to make your blood circulate better or something and i heard it decreases your chance of getting varicose veins (sp?)

  • I actually asked this question at my appointment today and I was told that it actually really doesn't matter unless you're having blood pressure issues. The nurse told me that being comfortable is the most important thing - so do what you can UNLESS your doctor advises otherwise.
