What do I need at my mom's house?

My mom lives in Texas and her friends are giving her a "grandma shower" next week.  They want me to register for things that I will need while visiting her.  I am going to register for a pack and play and an activity mat, but what else?  do i need a baby bath tub?  what about a convertible car seat...I don't want to go over board.  What do you guys have at your parents/in laws if they don't live in the same state?

Re: What do I need at my mom's house?

  • My mom has the following at her house (she lives a few hours away & I go stay with her about once a month b/c the company I work for is based out of her town):

    crib, sheets, blankets

    monitor

    bouncy seat

    some clothes/sleepers

    some toys

    books

My mom's goal is for me to not need to haul very much when I go visit.

ETA: You may want to add a stroller & baby feeding supplies (plates, spoons, sippy cups) to your mom's list.

  • I'd say a pack and play, activity mat, a convertible car seat...only so that you don't have to cart all that on the plane with you.  Other than that I don't know.  When you go visit you'll bring what ever you need and if you run out of diapers there are stores down here.  I've never heard of a "grandma shower", but I guess there's always gotta be a first for everything huh?

  • i made sure each grandparents home had some toys, a bottle or two, a sippy cup.  my parents make sure she has her own cup, plate and silverware now that she is older.   both grandparents live around 3 hours away.   we still take toys and her special sleep buddy/blanket with us, but otherwise they make sure to have stuff for her.  my parents bought a stroller-which is nice so we don't have to pack one all the time.
  • This probably won't help you because my mom lives 10 minutes away and watches my daughter and will watch the baby. So if your mom isn't going to be watching LO a lot or you aren't spending a lot of time on out-of-state visits, she can probably get away with the pack n play and maybe a few basic toys and things. Babies change fast so she won't need to stay stocked on newborn stuff for too long.

In my situation with my mom, SHE is the one who went overboard! The kids have their own room and it's sometimes better equipped than my own nursery!

I registered for the pack n play and she set up in her house for the baby to sleep in and my daughter slept in there for naps and the ocassional overnight until she was 2 1/2. We also got some duplicate stuff like those Fisher Price crib aquariums and she set one up at her house.

She has diapers, wipes, etc. A baby bathtub (a little one that sits in the kitchen sink--nothing fancy), all the toiletries that go along with that, towels, wash cloths, etc.

Those do come in handy when you're covered in spit up and baby needs a bath.

She has extra clothes, receiving blankets, etc.

She even bought herself a Boppy pillow so I could nurse while at her house.

She has bottles, sippy cups, and now that my daughter is three, she keeps the house stocked with PB and J, Goldfish, etc.

We spend a LOT of time at my parents' house so it's really nice to have a home away from home. I never had to worry about dragging even a diaper bag over there.

Of course we always had it in the car but I had all I needed right there.

She also bought herself a stroller and infant/toddler car seats. That's really nice because there are times when they want to take my daughter to the zoo or take her with them when they need to run errands or something.

It also made it easy to start leaving my daughter overnight.

That's just the basics--don't get me started on the toys!

  • My mom wen totally overboard when my nephew was born, and she has crib, toys high chair , tub etc... and as much as it may not be necessary, it has been really handy for my sister because all she has to bring is clothes and dipers.  So, while you probably only need the bigger items that are hard to travel with, I dont think it can go too overboard, it is just handy if everything is there... so go wild if you want
