2nd Trimester

To find out or not to Find out!

I always wanted to wait and have the babys gender be surprise... now that I can find out next week I really want to know but I feel like I will be disappointed if I do in the future... I really dont know what to do... my husband and I talked about finding out and not letting anyone else know what we are having but Im really not sure if I will regret finding out later on... what do you all think...

Re: To find out or not to Find out!

  • Will you still be registering for gender neutral things?  This was the determining factor for us with that plan.  My dh really wanted to be surprised and I knew if I found out there is so way that I would be registering for gender neutral stuff.

  • If you are going to regret it you shouldn't do it. If you don't find out now and want to know later you can always do that but it is certainly a personal choice.
  • i think im alright with buyinggender neutral stuff like strollers and such b/c if we have another baby in the future we wouldnt wanna buy all new stuff if the baby is a different gender...

im really just afraid ill regret finding out... i ruin all surprises...lol

  • Personally, if I knew it would be hard for me not to tell others, so I woulnd't find out and not tell. But our reason for not finding out was we want a surprise too, so I wouldn't consider finding out and keeping it a secret anyway.
  • DH and I are team green all the way.  We want it to be a total surprise.  Keeping it a secret is a good compromise.  Good luck with your decision either way.
  • is there a way to put my prego ticker on all my replys without doing it each time
  • It's fun to wait.  What you do next week for your "big u/s" is right away tell the tech that you don't want to find out the gender.  Before the tech even gets near your belly with the thingy.  Then you're stuck waiting (unless you change your mind later).

I like the anticipation of finding out when the baby is born.  That's why I'm team green.  But like you, have contemplated finding out next week at my big u/s... but I'll do what I suggested and keep it a surprise.

copy the ticker code and put it in  your profile signature.  To get to your signature go to "My bump" on the top left corner of the page and click on profile.  Then scroll down and add the code.

Yes.  Go to My Bump and edit your Profile.  Put the code down in your profile.  BTW, I can't see it in your original post.

  • thanks everyone... i needed some feedback and im gonna stick to what i always wanted im not going to find out!
  • We have registered for ALL gender neutral stuff as well because we will be having one more after LO.  I was not for finding out but the closer it got to the BIG u/s I started swaying.  DH was for finding out all the way.

The determining factor for me, personally, was hearing stories from friends, other people that wanted it to be a surprise but the delivery didn't go as planned and they were rushed in for an emergency c-section and put under anesthetic or having a rough labor in general and not hearing the dr say if it is a boy or girl.

So, instead we decided to have the u/s tech put the info in an envelope.  We met both of our families and friends for dinner (about 20 people total) and after everyone ordered we had my FIL open the envelope and announce to everyone the sex.  Everyone had a great time, before he opened it we went around the table and guessed what the gender was.  It was a lot of fun and I wouldn't have it any other way now!

  • Some things people say for and against finding out

    1) it is one of the only true surprises in life:  True but why is it less of a surprise at 20 weeks then it is at the birth.  You still get to be surprised

    2) Not finding out will help you push the baby out because you want to know what it is?  Umm if that is something you think will work for you then wait.  I knew what DD was and only pushed for 3 times and she was ot I was so excited to finally hold her it didn't matter I knew she was a she

    3) You can bond better if you know?  You can bond to your baby just because it is your baby knowing the gender doesn't enhance that but if you are really and truely hoping for one sex over another I would say find out so that way you have 20 weeks to be excited.  I have seen a few couples who were so shocked it was a different sex then what they were guessing that they were numb at the birth

I think you should do what is best for you.

  • I just found out yesterday and I'm super glad I did.  Now I can call Connor by his name, register for boy stuff,  and start looking at personalized items for him :)

I feel like it will make delivery that much more exciting because I'll know who I'm about to meet!!!
