Success after IF

I swear the NICU nurses jinxed me!

Every nurse Dillon had commented on how good of a baby he was. They said his temperament was really easy going. Cry - Pick him up - change him - feed him - cuddle him - sleep. That WAS how it went the past eleven days.

As we were going home the nurses who had him popped in and said "you are really lucky, he is such a joy - you will have such an easy time of it" blah blah blah.

So we get him home yesterday. He has not stopped screaming since. Well, he takes hour power naps to get re-energized anyway.

At first I thought maybe my house was colder then the NICU. I adjusted the heat, put his hat on, bundled him up. I swaddled, H swaddled. Nope. Night light on - night light off - nope and nope... Soft christmas music like the nurse used to play in the background - nope. Rough night!!!

Did anyone elses baby have difficulty adjusting once home? I feel horrible and I am praying this will get better when he gets used to the sights and sounds of his new environment? Or did the nurses jinx me and is this the new and improved Dillon?

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • The girls were the exact same coming home. Sorry you are having such a rough time. I remember the first real night at home.

Do you have to feed him on a schedule?

  • What about a white noise machine.  Those NICUs are pretty loud, maybe your house is too quiet?

  • Yes Carter was like this in the NICU but when he came ohome it was a different story. He didn't scream, he just wouldn't sleep and would whine all night. Sorry to say it took him a few weeks to get used to being at home I guess? and sleep better . Hang in there! Glad he is home!

  • My older son Jack had a very hard time transitioning home after his months in cardiac ICU after he was born.  For him though, it was all about noise... everything in his pod made so much.. the beeps, his cpap, all that stuff... so we had to get a white noise machine and start with it pretty loud to get him to chill out.. we slowly turned it down over a few weeks then he was ok after that.
  • Emma was the exact same way also.  She was good as gold in the NICU and now she has screaming fits every time I try to put her in her crib.  She is slowly getting better but it has not been fun at nights.

  • Thanks for the suggestion of white noise, my monitor has it but I did not try it. I will have to attempt that later to see if it helps a little.
